AT THE AGE of seven, Samuel's mother had made him aware that speaking of his father would only lead to a beating, he soon realized that it was no use trying to figure out who his father was, if his mother didn't want him in her life then neither should he.
But what he didn't understand was the fact that she had willingly brought up about his infidelity. Instead of telling him about this unjustifiable action with tears in her eyes and a frown on her face due to the pain of marriage and disloyalty, she had a heart filled with worry — and for another child.
"You have another brother." She said with both of her hands clutching his, as if pleading for something, "Your father had left him as well."
"Mom, why are you telling me this?" He asked as he looked up at his mother with his once young, sweet eyes. She could only hug him to her chest, letting out a pain filled sigh as she answered his question, "You need to take care of him."
Take care of him? Take care of him?
He was a child as well, he couldn't do that all on his own! But of course, his mother had no plans on seeing the other woman just to take the child, so she ordered him to take care of the baby without thinking of how it could possibly affect her own son, even as he looked at her with anger and annoyance, even as he slammed the door to their broken-down house, and even as he stomped all the way to the other house with tears streaming down his face, his fists balled up on his side then banging against the door.
Like a sudden unpleasant surprise, the door to the house opened to reveal a woman in her early twenties, a well-pampered baby — in his opinion back then — in her arms. As he peaked further through the door to find any signs of a man that could even mildly resemble anything what he assumed his father looked like, he found nothing but a cozy looking place inside. In that very moment, he already envied the baby in the woman's arms, having such a marvelous life more than he had.
"Yes, sweetie?" The way her soft voice entered his ear made him flinch, it was far from his mother's usual harsh words accompanied with multiple nags and an unpleasant tone. Again, he envied the baby even more, "I'm Samuel, ma'am. My mom told me to take care of my brother."
It was such an honest answer that the woman visibly halted with her movements, she had stopped swaying the baby gently in her arms and cooing at it. Samuel was expecting for her to get mad, to slam the door to his face or even yell at him to leave and never show up on her doorstep, but instead — instead — she told him to come in, pushing him towards the lavish kitchen with all the large fruits — he saw large apples, several bananas, and even a watermelon! It was his first time seeing it so close.
