I wake up in my sleeping compartment. I look at my pocket watch and see that its seven a.m.
I walk out my room corridor and into the hallway. The walls are a dull grayish white and looks faded slightly. I pass by our family's rooms and walk into the kitchen. It has a sink with drinkable tap water, a pantry, and a small stove. Like most rooms in the house it has fading grayish white walls.
"Good morning sweety." My mother says to me. She has brownish hair with a nearly perfect face and blue eyes. She has on our usual work clothes of grey. My father sits at the table patiently waiting for food while scribbling down some notes of his observations on plants. He has brown hair and brown eyes and has good features too. He is also in a science lab coat with a collar."Good morning mother and father." I reply. " What is for breakfast?" " A can of spam and some carrots again." My mom says blankly. I sigh and sit down.
At least we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Most families hardly have anything to eat. The sampsons for example only have one meal a day, two if they are lucky and have enough to spare.
"What are you writing about this time dad?" I ask while I wait for my food. A report on the new disease that is affecting wheat. "oh." I manage to mumble. Plants fascinate me honestly, but my spirits are getting down because of all the plant shortages. People are saying that what little plants are left are going extinct.
Every house has a garden, and we grow our own food. We all also have our own beehives. usually two if you can afford it. We regulate the temperature in the greenhouse and let the bees work.
The thing is, sometimes things don't work out and the bees die. Usually by temperature variations or a disease somehow. If you don't have a backup hive, then you are in trouble for sure. Most likely facing starvation unless you have a good stockpile of food. We were lucky when it happened to us. We had a back up hive and now we have another backup hive too. I remember how we had sweet honeycomb that week. It was so delicious. I savored every bite. We had to take the contaminated parts and burn it in the incenerator and let the smoke blow outside.
Outside. That one word describes something truly awful. I will get to that later though. Suddenly I am snapped back into reality by my plate of food landing beside me.
"I don't want it!" My little brother screams. I swear he can be the most annoying thing, but I still love him. He some how has blond hair and blue eyes and is in gray clothes like me too."If You eat it then I will let you play in my room." I tell him. That gets him eating real fast.
I see my mother's mouth a thank you to me. I nod back. After we're all done eating my father calls for me in the greenhouse.
I follow him into the corridor and step inside the white glowing room.
I feel a rush of humidity as the doors close behind me. There is row upon row of plants that stretch throughout the greenhouse. I smile as I see them and instantly recognise them. Tomatoes, wheat, onions, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, corn, potatoes, several herbs, two apple, pear, peach, and cherry trees, and a few small flowers to provide extra nectar for bees.
"Son come over here." I hear my dad say and I follow his command. He is standing in front of our wheat. I look at it expecting to see it healthy but am startled by what I see. Some of the plants are black and withered and dead.
"What happened!" I exclaim. "I don't know but the exact same thing is happening at other outposts. "I just wanted to show you." He says. It looks like my fathers hiding something but I just ignore it.
I go back into my room later and wonder what to do. I decide to talk to the house computer. "Tachyon!" I say and then I instantly hear a voice from the computer. "Sir?" the computer says. "I've already told you, don't call me that Tachyon." "I'm sorry, but I am programmed to address you that way, but I must obey your commands." After a moment he adds, "Zach." I crack a smile as I look up at his hologram that the house is projecting.
"Ok Tachyon, what should me and you do today." I say. "It is up to you sir." He responds. I think for a moment and then realize what I want to do. "Show me a picture of the earth during its twighlight hours before the war." Immediately Tachyon pulls up tons of pictures of human life.
I see strange buildings that were their version of houses back then. No radiation proof lead shielding or reinforced steel and concrete plating. I was amazed by every aspect of how they lived. I seen videos being played of kids running outside on strange plants that were called grass. There were animals called dogs barking and playing with the kids.
I stood there for two hours watching and seeing things when my mom came in and said that the Traughbers needed a message to be delivered to them. "Yes ma'am." I said. "While your at it you can chat with your friend Gerald too over there." She tells me. I say goodbye to Tachyon and go into the air lock.
I put on my oxygen gear and nightvision goggles and other scientific insturments. Then I finally dawn my radiation proof reinforced hazmat suit and press the airlock button and step outside.
