Apocalypse

I press myself against the door of the closet, breathing as quietly as possible, and patiently wait until I hear the footsteps walk away. I silently get out and check out to my right, then my left, for any dead walker before running down the hallway. I can hear my heart pounding rapidly, almost exploding inside my chest. I'm alerted by a loud thump downstairs. I head down as quickly as I can, trying not to make a sound. I then enter the kitchen and find Ruri, my sister, and Yelena, my best friend, next to two zombies laying on the floor. They're panting heavily with each holding a metal tube with their hands. I hug my sister and ask if they're ok. I'm glad we found each other again. We're running out of supplies, so we decide to get out of the hospital through the back door, trying not to alert the zombies around.

All of this is Mina's fault. I think while running. She's the one who caused the world to become infested with zombies five months ago. She's the ruler of the underground world in this city, and with the help of her subordinates and lots of money, she managed to create a powerful drug, Then, after infecting one or two people, the deadly poison started spreading around the world, and here we are. We once ran into her a couple weeks ago and had a brutal fight, leaving her almost dead and all of us seriously injured, so we had better not run into her anytime soon if we don't want that to happen again. I don't know what she could do if she sees us again; better not even think about that.

Besides, we also need to find Kaya as soon as possible. She's Ruri's best friend. They met when Kaya was 6 and Ruri 4 years old and have been friends since then up to today, 13 yeas later. She has been with us for these months, fighting by our side. That was until a couple of days ago, when we woke up in this hospital just like this past week, but she wasn't here anymore. We've been searching non-stop as we can for these seven days, but she's nowhere to be found. It's like the Earth swallowed her and she suddenly disappeared.

We keep running and head for an alley, but suddenly find ourselves stopped by a three meter tall fence blocking our way. We need to get to the other side in order to find the supermarket, so we move some wooden boxes and place them next to it. Yelena is the first to climb it and she jumps to the other side, followed by me who also easily climbs it and land next to my friend. Then it's Ruri's turn, she gets onto one of the boxes and starts moving up the fence.

All of a sudden, we hear a shot, and Ruri screams while falling to the ground with a heavy thud. She whimpers and tries to sit up, covering her bloody leg with her trembling hand, trying to prevent the bleeding but failing.  Yet another bullet reaches her arm making her fall again. Terrified, I distinguish a silhouette on her side of the alley. I slowly open my eyes, which are starting to fill with tears, and then rolling down my cheeks. I recognize it. It can't be, my mind's playing tricks on me. But she laughs out loud, it's her voice, it's her, that monstrous woman who led all of this to happen. I discern the unpleasant sight of her smirk, her pose, the look in her eyes, all of it making me nauseous, my head spinning.

I come to my senses and try reaching for the fence; I need to save Ruri from that devil. But Yelena grabs me and throws me to the floor, getting on top of me to prevent me from trying. I know she does it for my own good, even though it hurts her too, but I still fight to get away from her grip. She's still stronger than me, she always has been, so my efforts are futile. Tears blur my vision while I scream, and I hear Yelena trying to calm me down, but despite that, I can hear anger in her voice. All this while Mina just laughs hysterically at the sight. She's really enjoying herself at the moment, amused by our suffering.

In one swift move, she pulls on the rope she's holding, which I hadn't noticed until now, and another person appears. Well, not exactly a person, but a zombie. Nothing stands out about it at first, however, I start to notice something familiar on it. It's not any zombie. It's Kaya. She looks emaciated, with rotting body parts. Ruri slowly opens her eyes, horrified and cries out her name with her face all wet from all the spilled tears.

Suddenly, Mina lets go of the rope, pushing the dead girl towards the alley. Kaya starts running furiously towards Ruri, who is too shocked to move and still bleeding on the dirty floor. I scream, reaching out for my sister just when Kaya is about to bite her.

I wake up shaking, drenched in sweat on my bed, with tears flowing down my cheeks and breathing heavily. Was it all a dream?  Ruri abruptly opens my door, telling me to get ready for school. I hastily get dressed, brush my teeth and put on my shoes. We both walk slowly in silence and arrive at the school gate. When we get there, our friends are waiting for us, as a always. Yelena bumps my shoulder greeting me, Kaya and Ruri hug each other and Mina simply waves at us. I'm still nervous about the dream, so I decide to explain it to them. I'm sure they'll help me calm down. As I thought, Ruri and Kaya tell me to stop worrying about something so freaky and Yelena just laughs at my wild imagination. I'm now calmer and let out a chuckle, agreeing with them. The four of us start heading towards the front gate talking about everything like we do every day, but Mina stays behind.

What I'm unable to notice is her malicious smile and the sudden mischievous look in her eyes, warning me that maybe it's not that much of a crazy idea.

Nightmares can sometimes become reality.
