Y/N

I'd be lying if I said I don't like my mother's fiance. We are seated at the dinner table and he is cracking jokes like no one else. Now, I feel embarrassed for all the words I said to my mother about him.

"How's work at the library?" my mother asks.

"I love it. I wish I could work there full-time, but the staff is full." Saying this out loud made me think, what would it be like knowing I will not be around my friends like I am now? I know working as a waitress is not what I plan on doing my whole life, but I like having good people around me.

"What about your friend you're living with right now? What's she like?"

"It's actually a he. His name is Jungkook and he is really nice."

"What?" She asks, raising her voice. "You didn't tell me you are living with a guy."

"Well, you never asked."

"Are you for real, Y/N? If I knew you'd end up living with a guy, I would have never allowed you to do that." Jae-suk tries to calm her down as he puts his hand on top of hers.

Really? I thought we were past this now, but she is bringing it back from the start. How can she be mad when she is the reason I ended up living at someone else's house? Just as I was about to reply, my brother Hoseok beats me to it.

"You are the one to blame, mom. If there's someone here who should be mad, it's Y/N. I was just as angry when you told me about the house, but at least I had a roof over my head, and she had no one. I'm sorry I couldn't be here for you, Y/N," he turns to me and puts his hand on my shoulder, comforting me as he apologizes for something he should not. He had no clue what was going on either.

"I'm sorry too, Y/N," Jae-suk interrupts apologetically. "I didn't know about the condition of the house you inherited from your father. If there's anything I can do to help-"

"No worries, I've already taken care of most of it and I'll move in once I get back."

I know my mom is sorry for what she did, but I understand that it's difficult for her to accept that I'm currently living with a guy.

"Good," she sighs with relief after hearing my words.

If only she knew what was really going on... She's a bit old-fashioned when it comes to these things, and she wouldn't be too happy about it.

"So, who's this guy?" Hoseok asked quietly, as he took a seat next to me in the living room after we ate dinner.

It's no wonder he noticed, I've been constantly checking my phone since I got here this morning. I just can't stop thinking about the cuddles I had with Jungkook last night, for some reason. It's making me want to text him and ask how his day is going at his parents' house, but at the same time, I don't want to bother him.

"What guy?" I replied, pretending to be clueless.

"The guy you're living with now? Is he the one you're expecting a text from?"

"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. However, his name is Jungkook. He has been incredibly helpful to me and he's genuinely a great person." I can't help but feel my face getting warm.

"Yeah, you already mentioned that," he says with a smile. "If you two end up together, I want to be the first to know, got it? I won't give my approval otherwise."

"What? I never said there was anything going on between us," I respond, feeling a bit tense and caught up in my own thoughts and emotions. I didn't realize I was so unaware of how I come across when I talk about Jungkook. Do I stumble over my words? Do I blush? I hope not.

"Anyway, I'm feeling a bit tired. I'm going to go to sleep."

"You're a terrible liar, Y/N," I hear my brother's voice echo from the living room.

The following day, Jungkook sends me a message requesting that I give him a call whenever I have some free time. What gives him the impression that I wouldn't prioritize him?

His voice brings joy to my day, but it bothers me when he mentions that he would have preferred to spend the holidays alone.

I'm concerned about him and assure him that he can confide in me about anything, but he doesn't provide much information apart from having a minor disagreement with his stepfather, leaving me wanting to know more.

~

The past couple of weeks have been absolutely awful. I had a great time with my family, but deep down, I was really hurting because I haven't been able to interact with Jungkook much.

It's been 5 days since our last call, and our conversations have been scarce. He keeps insisting that everything is fine, but I'd have to be pretty naive to believe that.

I'm standing right outside his front door, feeling a bit nervous about unlocking it. Instead, I decide to ring the bell. I don't want to startle him by barging in since I didn't inform him about my return today. Well, I would have if he had bothered to answer my texts.

As the door swings open, a few seconds tick by before I gather the courage to react. My mind is a whirlwind of confusion, unsure of how to respond.

If this were just two weeks ago, I would have eagerly leaped into his arms, but now, I hesitate. It doesn't feel like the right thing to do.

"Hey," I manage to say, attempting to push aside the negative thoughts that cloud my mind.

His voice carries a hint of surprise as he responds, "Hey, what are you doing here? I didn't know you were coming back today."

"I thought I'd surprise you," I admit sheepishly.

"Oh, you definitely did," he says, opening the door to let me in. He makes space for me and my suitcase to pass through. I can't quite read his expression, but it doesn't seem like he's thrilled to see me, and that hurts.

"Would you like something to drink?" he asks, joining me in the living room.

I take a moment to really look at him before answering. Oh, how I've missed him. It wasn't easy for me when he didn't respond or call me like he promised.

He's dressed in dark blue jeans, a beige sweater, and accessorized with silver necklaces and rings. Is he going somewhere? It's only 6pm in the afternoon.

Right as I was about to respond, I suddenly hear a voice calling out to Jungkook from his bedroom.

"Jungkook?" she asks as she steps out of his room.
