Chapter 17

His voice. Like music to my ears.

 I'd been without that voice for too long.

My eyes frantically searched for him, he was standing in the middle of the group of rebels. I make my way too him through the crowd of people and skitters to get to him.

 I finally got to him and I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest, breathing him in. I looked up to him and he brought his lips to mine. I became suddenly aware of all the people in the room, and all eyes were on us.

Bressler let out a sigh, "Stand Down," his men dropped their guns and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

I backed away from Ben a bit so that Tom, Hal, and Matt could greet him. Matt clung tight to Ben's waist, "I'm so glad you're back!"

Ben smiled and kiss Matt's head, "Me too"

We led Ben and Red Eye down the haul to the meeting room so they could explain everything.

"Alice, we've found so many other deharnessed kids, and a ton of rebel skitters have joined the cause. It's amazing," He told me as we walked down the halls together.

"That's great! Charleston has a nice army," I said aloud, "Good luck getting them to use it though," I added in a hushed tone.

"What? Why?"

"Nothing, they just don't have the open minds that the second mass has"

"Well maybe Red Eye can open their eyes,"

"I hope so," we made it to the room and I stood back.

"You aren't coming in?" Ben asked

"I'm not sure I'd be 100% welcome. I've done a pretty good job at pissing Bressler off so far, better just stay out of the way,"

Ben looked confused.

"It's okay, I don't mind," I added.

 He nodded and went in and closed the door.

I paced back and forth waiting to see how it went. No way they'd believe the rebels, but it's worth a shot.

"So I see you're boyfriend made it back in one piece," I heard Pope's voice coming down the hall.

"What are you doing here Pope?"

"Just came in to get some grub"

"Thought you were in lock up."

"Nope, they let me out. Good behaviour," he said with a wink.

I laughed, "Yea right, You couldn't be good if your life depended on it"

"Oh you're one to talk Princess. Didn't you just get off suspension?" he said in a taunting tone.

"Yea well, Bressler had it coming if you ask me. These people tap dance on my last good nerve," I said rubbing my head, just thinking about them was irritating.

"Amen child. Ya know you really should be a beserker. You have the attitude for it, You'd just have to lose the spikey boyfriend."

I shook my head, "Not a chance Pope," I said with a smile.

"Well if you ever changed your mind, You know where to find us," He did a sarcastic bow before walking down the hall and out of sight. I swear, he's a pain in the ass, but he's always been there for me when I needed him. Although he wasn't a fan of Ben.

Finally Ben and the others emerged from the conference room.

"So?" I asked.

"I wouldn't hold my breathe. They are seriously stubborn on the whole war thing aren't they?"
