A couple months came and went. Jack would still bother me every once in awhile; he would just wait until Jesmin was gone. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like things were starting to brighten up. Jake was starting to contribute to our conversations at lunch and Ron was really starting to like having another gay couple in our school. During the school hours, Jesmin never left my side. Turns out someone talked administration into giving her my schedule so now we were hanging out every day. I guess word got around about Jesmin beating up Jack because, slowly, the bullies and death threats started to disappear. If anything, people wanted me to be their friend. I didn’t believe them for one second. I knew that as soon as Jesmin left or we broke up (cross your fingers that that never happens), things would go back exactly how they were. Ron, Jake, and Jesmin were my only true friends and I knew that I could trust them. Maybe things would actually look up. Jesmin and I were going out on our usual TGIF date when everything changed.
Tonight was our six month anniversary. I tried to look a little more feminine, but gave up and went with my normal clothes. I remember exactly what I wore that night. A navy blue button down and black jeans. I also wore my black Converse high tops with the Pink Floyd prism printed on the side. I slapped on just a tiny bit on cologne, just to top the stud look. I tried putting some gel in my black hair, but gave up. It was too short to do anything with anyways. I threw on my leather jacket and tucked my rainbow wallet into my back pocket.
“C'mon Jessika, I’m gonna be late. And you know Jesmin is.” I yelled down the hall.
I lived with one of my friends from way back. I don’t know how long exactly I have lived here but it’s about eight years. At least, that’s what Steve and Sara told me. Steve and Sara were Jessika’s parents, and were more of a mom and dad to me than my real parents. That meant that Jessika was like a sister to me instead of just a friend. My parents...well I don’t know what happened to my parents. Jessika and her parents said that my parents dropped me off here one day and just haven’t come back. No one knew that part of my life. All they knew was I had a roof over my head.
She stood at about 5’5” and had dark brown hair that she always kept straight. The very tips of her hair were lime green, which I always thought was kind of attractive. She looked like a model, even when she was in pajamas. The school she went to was Hood Academy. I know, it sounds like some rich kids school. Her parents were always off on business trips, so she and I usually had the house to ourselves. It’s not like we threw any parties or anything. I mean, what junior would want a freshman at a party anyway? Anyway, Jessika groaned and slowly rose out of her bean bag.
“You know I have a Taekwondo class tonight. Why can’t you just get Jesmin to pick you up so I’m not late. If you think Jesmin is picky about time, imagine the looks on the faces of those moms waiting to drop off their kid.” Jessika always complained about something, but I loved her anyway. I had forgotten about that class. On the weekends sometimes, Jessika helps out at the Taekwondo place that she goes to. She pretty good at it, considering she's been taking classes for the past three years.
“Well if you move your lazy ass, maybe we can both be on time.” I kicked her ass as a joke and handed her her keys. “Well, c’mon we don’t have all day. I’m supposed to meet Jesmin in twenty minutes and at the rate you’re moving, it’ll take us an hour to get there.”
“I’m moving, I’m moving. God, you are so demanding.” Jessika locked up the door and unlocked the doors to her Gold Toyota Prius.
“Love you too...” I mumbled. Maybe Jessika was going to start her period or something because she was a lot grumpier than usual. Oh wait, she did say something about her boyfriend forgetting their anniversary or something like that. I had seen him in the house a couple of times, but I usually just went to my room because I knew what would happen. Someone would say something, some crashing and banging and then the door slamming. Her boyfriend’s name was Alec something. Like I said, I don’t pay attention to their relationship. It’s been up and down since he was applying to colleges. Jessika is scared that he’ll start seeing other girls and completely forget about her. I should know. I’m the one who listens to her crying at night and is the one she comes to when she’s having a problem.
