Unloading my stuff didn't take long, especially with Kai helping. Luckily we didn't see Archie again- he was always inside his flat when we were getting more stuff from the car. I'm not sure why but I felt like keeping them two apart was now a priority. Not that it would matter once Kai went home. I turned to Kai, he was leaning against my desk, head turned to face the window. He looked good from every angle. His bicep was tensed from holding him up and it looked like it was going to rip the sleeve of his t-shirt. His jaw was defined and covered in stubble. The hair on his face once again made me think he was older than me- Archie hadn't quite reached the age of being able to grow facial hair.
"How old are you?" Kai looked at me. "Twenty."
That surprised me. That only makes him a year older than me. "You're eighteen?" He asked and stood to face me.
"Nineteen, actually. I took a year off before I came to university." He raised his eyebrows. "What did you do?"
"I went to Australia. With Archie." He smirked and took a step towards me. "So you two really are inseparable then?" I don't know why that annoyed me. The look on his face made me feel like a naive teenager obsessed with her boyfriend. "We're not inseparable." I bit back. "We just enjoy being together."
He scoffed and took another step towards me. "Have you ever been with anyone but him?" I shook my head. He raised his eyebrows again. "Then how do you know you wouldn't prefer someone else's company more?" I swallowed, my mouth suddenly dry as he took another step towards me. I had to look up to see his face now.
"I suppose I don't know." I admitted.
"Well, maybe coming to a new city is the perfect time to find out." He was staring into my eyes so intensely that I had to look away.
"Kai!" Mia shouted from next door.
"That's my queue." Kai huffed and left the room.I unpacked all of my stuff, made my bed and laid out the pictures I had brought with me to put on my pinboard. Looking down at the pictures, I realised the only people in them were me, Archie and Mum. Over the last five years, I had got so comfortable with just the three of us, that I had lost touch with all of my other friends. I was suddenly embarrassed, Kai had a point- Archie is the only person my age who is in my life. Am I really going to let one conversation with this guy make me feel so insecure? I gathered up the pictures and threw them in a drawer- I'll pin them up another time. Now I was mad, what right did Kai have to make me feel like being with only Archie was a bad thing? I'm not going to let this bother me. I still didn't put up the pictures.
I knocked on Mia's door. It had been two hours since Kai had left my room so I assumed it was safe.
"Come in." I was right, Mia was sat alone on her bed. Her room really put mine to shame. Her walls were covered in pictures and posters. Her bed was black with red cushions scattered all over and the red lamp in the corner made the room feel really cosy. Mine barely looked like anyone had moved in. "There's a guy moving into the room next to mine, he's really cute but looks like the quiet type. I think I would scare him." I laughed, Mia would definitely scare him. "Has anyone else moved in?" I asked her, she seemed to know more than me.
"Not yet." Mia sighed. "They must be coming tomorrow."
Mia's door opened and Kai and their mum walked in holding takeaway bags. I thought he had left.
"We got chinese food!" Mia's mum said grinning.
"I'll leave you guys to eat." I turned to leave, hoping to make a quick exit.
"Nonsense, we have loads. We'll need help if we want to finish it all!" Their mum turned and shut the door behind them. There goes my escape route. We all sat on the floor and ate and chatted and laughed. I gave all my attention to Mia and their mum. Who I learnt was called Becca. I'm not sure I had even glanced at Kai and we had been sat eating for almost an hour. He had gone to the kitchen to get a drink so I took it as my opportunity to find out more about him. "So, where are you from?"
Mia laughed. "We actually live about ten minutes from here. I got in on a scholarship so couldn't turn it down. I really wanted to move out and get the full experience though, so I moved in anyway."
I laughed. I'd probably see more of Kai than expected then. The door opened and in walked Kai followed by Archie.
"Charlotte, someones looking for you." Kai was grinning.
Shit, Archie.
I stood, thanked Becca for the food and followed Archie out of the room.
"I thought the plan was to unpack and then go out together for dinner? I've been ringing you."
He looked pissed.
"I'm sorry my phone is in my room and their mum asked me to join them to eat, I didn't want to seem rude and say no."
Archie threw his hands out in front of him. "Why didn't you just tell them you had plans."
Truth is I forgot but that would just piss him off more. He sighed and turned to leave. "The guys in my flat invited me to the pub so I'm just going to go and meet them." Then he left.
I let myself back into my room and picked up my phone. Six missed calls. We'd been at university for less than a day and we were already arguing. I grabbed my fluffy pink blanket off my bed, wrapped myself in it and sat at my desk.
