I ran faster and faster, jumping over broken logs and swinging around trees, the beast catching up with me quickly. I stopped in the middle of the woods and conjured up the remainder of my energy, almost all of it drained thanks to all of that running, allowing it to pulse through my chest and seep into my arms, like blood in veins. My power blasted out of my hands, creating a giant portal somewhere deeper in the woods. I threw myself inside, tumbling as I heard the enormous holler the beast gave before the portal closed behind me.
"It's about time, Clemmy!" Grant teased, leaning on a nearby tree. His dark hair shaded his face, making him seem even more intimidating in the night, as he usually was after competing.
He laughed when I glowered at him. I brushed myself off and stood back up.
"You know," Grant said, "I never knew you could be such a fast runner! You ran away from that beast way quicker than I expected."
The hologram of the forest disappeared, revealing the cool galactic place we were working in.
"Well done, my contestant!" My teacher congratulated me, stepping out of the small desk he was sitting at. Every other student clapped. "I think you have great potential to be my top student!"
I blushed, ignoring Grant's snickers a few feet away from me, even though when he escaped the beast it was still a bit behind me- finally.
Though I realized he was laughing at my big red face that I tried to cover with the long strands of my red hair.
"Thank you, Mr. Zack."
"You're certainly welcome, Clementine. Keep up the good work! Next!"

I joined Grant in the lobby, where everybody took breaks after a long day of training.
Basically, this beast infestation appeared out of no where after this one stupid man by the name of David Leon- a guy who thought he was sooo brave to just step into a different dimension- thanks to a very talented scientist- where a bunch of wild beasts lived and attracted them into our world. So, my human parents sent me to this camp where I could train to be able to get rid of all of the beasts and send them back to their dimension. It'd already been five months, and I'd only gotten the hang of escaping the beasts in case I was in trouble and I couldn't defeat them on my own. I didn't really need too much training anyway since I had a really good power, so I considered the classes and training a plan B.
My parents didn't want me to go to this camp at first because it was very close to a bunch of wild beasts and also out of the city, but Mr. Zack said that I was the only way they could get all of the beasts back into their dimensions, and that wasn't going to be easy without some basic practice, for a couple months.
"So," Grant said as he stirred his tea, in a nice comfortable chair. "Ready to get in my face, and tell me that I was slower while training than you?" He looked a little annoyed despite his comment, and I already knew he wasn't good at controlling his temper, so I just leaned back into my chair and sighed, trying to put the spotlight on me. That always seemed to work for us.
"The thing is, Grant. I haven't seen my family in such a long time. And this place is killing me!" My eyes were watering with the admit. "I'm just trying to get better so I can remove these beasts and go home."
We both got quiet, the sound of other students chatting and sipping tea swallowing the awkwardness.
"Ugh, I'm sorry, I know you're not the sappy type."
"No, it's fine. I miss my family too."
I looked up at him and caught his sad expression as he stared at the inside of his tea. I reached over the table and held his hand, but he pulled it away. "Hey, listen, I'm sor-"
"Shhh!" He silenced me. Looking off to the side like he was listening for something. "Do you hear that?"
"Hear what...?" I tried listening over everyone, then heard a low rumbling sound. I gasped. " I hear it!"
Grant set his tea down and it started to shake. Tea spilt everywhere, the rumbling getting louder.
"Could it be an earthquake?" I asked, the floor starting to shake a little, not that noticeable.
"Let's go see what it is." Grant said, getting up and speed walking into the hall. I was at his heels as we took a long route to the noise, waiting to see if it would get worse.
It got a lot worse.
We stopped at a wall that shook as roughly as the ground, the best point.
Grant put his ear up to the wall when his eyes widened. "Run, Clemmy! RUN!"
But he was too late. A dark shadowy hand burst it's way through the wall beside Grant and I. It swatted the air until it felt Grant.
Grant blazed the hand with his powers. The beast growled and grabbed Grant despite the fire. Grant screamed as it took Grant out.
Shocked, I didn't know what to do. I screamed and raced in front of the large hole in the wall.
"HELP!" I screamed into the hall, though I didn't hear any of the other students rush to get here. Suddenly, to my right was a posh lady who was racing towards me in a tight red dress and red heels. I didn't ask why she was so fancy while I was still panicking. "Help, it took Grant!"
She looked out of the hole in shock. The beast was there waving Grant over its mouth. Grant shot fire balls at his face, burning some of its shadowy flesh.
The woman placed a hand on my shoulder. "I think we should leave him."
I pulled away, aghast. I didn't know this lady, but K wasn't going to listen to her. Instead, I jumped out of the hole and plummeted to the ground. I felt powerful, my fear and angst my fuel. I dropped into a portal that dropped me into the sky, hurtling me to another place. I screamed, this time drained to portal again.
Fortunately, a small girl with black pigtails held me in the air, saving me from a gruesome death. I thanked her as she slowly brought me closer to the wailing beast. I bared my teeth as I fell onto its back, it too big for it to notice me.
"Clemmy!" Grant yelled, creating more flames, this time igniting the arm that was holding Grant.
"Grant! No!" I shouted. I climbed up the beast as it tossed its head back in a loud blood curdling shriek. I covered my ears while standing on its head. Grant fell and managed to stick himself into the shadowy belly of the beast before he was too late. "I'm coming!"
"Clementine! Wait!" Mr. Zack yelled. I looked over my shoulder, he was in a small force field in the air. "This is your chance to portal this beast away."
My heart sunk. "But Grant is still on this thing! And I'm too weak-" I tried to yell back when the beast nearly threw me off.
"Don't worry!" Grant yelled, now on the back of the beast, climbing his way up to me. "I think they got me covered." He gestured his head to the rest of the students who were now ready to fight.
"Okay," I sighed, closing my eyes. The beast was still, struggling to break free from the force field Mr. Zack built around him, holding him still, while everyone else tried to save Grant.
"Ready!" Mr. Zack told me.
I didn't open my eyes, everything around me growing still. My focus was bigger this time. I needed bigger, bigger, bigger then I had ever done.
My dark brown eyes shot open, my hands in front of me, ready for my power to break free. My hands glowed, a super bright light bursting out of them. In front of us, I had finally learned how to create a large portal.
