The air was so dry and crisp as it brushed across my chapped lips. They were cracked so badly I think they bled a little. I pushed my little braids out of my face and bent down to tie my shoelaces in the middle of an intense game of Tag. My best friend Arthur was it, and he was awfully slow at tagging anyone so far. I think it's because he forgot his glasses at home today. But I figured it would be a minute before he could find me. After tying my shoelaces I stood up and then something caught my eye. It was a butterfly on the flowers in the garden that was weirdly placed in the middle of the school yard. I hated that garden. All it had was scary bee's and it gave me the worst allergies ever. But before I could bring my finger to it, my shoulder was jerked back and to my surprise Arthur finally caught me. He was way too excited . I thought tag was a silly game. But he has finally managed to get someone this time, so I forced a fake pout to insure he thought I cared about being it.Before I could even start chasing Arthur down, the bell rang. And recess was finally over. I ran through the hallways so i wouldn't be late for ms.morris's class. She was a librarian at our school but she taught us grammar and how to read and form our sentences. She always tells us that words are sharper than a sword. First grade was so hard so I was so glad to have her. She was my favorite. I quickly made it into class and swiftly made it to the bookshelf to get a book to read before she started. I turned to my left and noticed that my best friend Sofia wasn't in class yet. I couldn't even concentrate on the book. I kept peeking through the door to see when she would come in. But she never did. She was always late or absent. She always said her mother wouldn't bring her or that her mother wasn't feeling well. But whenever she did show up it was always in yesterday's clothes.
I told my mother about it one day afterschool but she told me "sweetie we shouldnt concern ourselves with other businesses. It's impolite and rude, I'm sure she's just fine". My mother was always so politically correct, she was so gentle and only kept to herself. But i listened to her, so i never asked Sofia anymore about why she wasn't at school or why she didn't have anyone to help her with her homework or why i couldn't come over for a playdate. Sofia always comes over to my house. And when she does come she walks or takes the bus. I always wondered where her mother was. But again I never asked any more questions after that day with my mother.
