Monica walked through the dry Utah desert with tears streaming from her eyes. She had just seen the worst explosion of her entire existence as an angelic case worker. Her assignment, the new angel named Gloria, was a tough case. She didn't know how to help her in a time of need. Gloria's first assignment was a little girl named Madeline. Unfortunately, she was hit by the explosion and was in the hospital.
Monica told her supervisor, Tess, that she needed time to think alone. Tess didn't listen, and sent their dearest friend, Andrew, to talk to her. Monica's face lit up as she saw her dear blond friend walk towards her. Quickly wiping her tears, she buried her face in Andrew's chest.
"Ya know, when I said I wanted to be alone, I didn't think Tess would actually listen. I'm glad she didn't. It's so good to see you, Andrew." She sobbed into his chest and he pulled her closer to him.
"Shh. It's alright, Monica. I'm here. You'll be okay. I promise you. I'm the Angel of Death for crying out loud, I've seen so much more death than you have and I'm still here aren't I baby?" His voice easily could calm his dearest friend's fears.
"I know. Oh how I love you, Andrew. I don't know what I'd do without you as a friend." She felt a pit in her stomach as she said the word "friend." It didn't feel right. Ever since they met, she had been attracted to him. Since they were angels, it was obviously forbidden. She always wondered if he felt the same love for her.
"I don't know what I'd do without you either." He cupped her cheek with his hand, stroking her hair from her face. "You are a pure gift from God, Monica. Don't you forget that."
She smiled softly at him, not wanting to take her eyes off of him. Just as she was getting lost in his emerald eyes for the millionth time, she heard a car screech to a halt by where they were standing. She knew immediately who it was. "Oh Father, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Her tears were flowing faster now. "What did I do? Why are you here, Father?"
"I just want to show you something." The man, dressed in all white, smiled softly at them. "Listen to me, both of you. You're going to get in this car and I'm going to drive until I stop somewhere. You are not to get out of the car until I stop. Do you understand?"
The two angels nodded and approached the car. Andrew held open the back door for Monica and slid in beside her. He didn't waste any time putting his hand in hers. "I'm here. Whatever is going to happen, we will fight this, together. You're my best friend, Monica. I don't want anything to happen to you without it happening to me too. We have always been a team, you know that." He squeezed her hand and pressed a kiss to the side of her head. Monica didn't speak, but she squeezed his hand as tightly as she dared to until the car stopped moving.
"Get out." The man opened the back door for the angels, waiting impatiently for them to move. Once they were all out of the car, the man made the angels close their eyes. "Monica, what do you see?" The man asked her.
"It's me, and Andrew." A small smile crept on her face and she tried to stop herself from grinning. "There are so many kids. I have always wanted a family." Her hand subconsciously moved to her stomach when she noticed that the vision was of her being pregnant.
"I know you have." The man smiled. "Now, Andrew, what do you see?"
"I see me and Monica. We're in the middle of the woods, stargazing. She has her head on my chest, and I'm kissing her forehead. It's just two friends stargazing. Why does she get one about family and us being together when all I get is stargazing?! Haven't you heard my prayers about how much I love her and want to be with her for all eternity?" He looks at the man, tears forming in his eyes. "I probably should have kept that to myself." He looked down at his shoes.
"I know, Andrew. I heard you, loud and clear. I just needed Monica to hear it from you. You have been asking for centuries, and frankly, I've had enough of waiting to tell you. When you showed up to help Monica in her darkest time, that is when I knew you two belong together. That is why I have taken human form and come to deliver this message myself. I figured you wouldn't listen to Tess if I told her, and she doesn't know." The man looked at both of the angels, noticing how tightly they were holding each other. "I have seen how over the past few centuries you two have become quite close. That is why I am giving you my blessing to be together. You are to stay as angels on Earth and do your assignments at my will, but you may be together. Now I command you to go finish your assignments at once." The man quietly got in his car, and in a split second, he was gone. The car was replaced by hundreds of white doves flying in the air.
"Yes, Father." They both said in unison.
"That was not what I expected." Monica smiled at her beloved friend.
"Me neither, baby, but I'm glad that it happened. I have been praying since the day I met you that I could be with you. Monica, do you know how much love I have for you?" The blond angel couldn't hold back his tears as he cupped her face again.
"I love you, Andrew. So much." Monica smiled as she kissed his cheek.
He ran his fingers through her auburn hair and captured her lips in a sweet kiss. "I have waited centuries to do that, Angel Girl." A small blush crept onto his cheeks.
"I have waited centuries for it too, Angel Boy!" She captured his lips in a more passionate kiss, running her fingers through his hair. His cologne filled her senses with joy and she didn't want the moment to end.
"I cannot believe that the Father Himself came to Earth to bless us with this. It is truly a miracle, baby. You have always been a miracle to me my whole existence, you know!" Andrew smiled at his beloved Monica and covered her face in kisses. He couldn't get enough of her and her angelic presence. "Now, about that assignment today. We need to go back to Gloria and Madeline. I have to take Madeline home where she can be with her mom." His face softened, trying to read his beloved angel's expression. "You should come with, it will all be okay. She can go to Heaven with her mom, and you can teach Gloria about the meaning of love. You can finish your assignment. I believe in you, baby." He kissed her lips once more.
"Alright. I'll go." Monica sighed as she melted into his kiss. Seconds later, they were back in the hospital where Madeline was sleeping and Gloria was reading her a story. She pulled Gloria aside and placed a hand on her arm. "I'm sorry for leaving you, Gloria. I think you should read Madeline one more story." She walked over to Madeline and crouched down next to her bed. "Madeline, sweetheart, Gloria is going to read you one more story and then you will get to go see your mommy." She stroked Madeline's cheek with the back of her hand.
Gloria sat down next to her and began her story. "Once upon a time, there was a brand new angel named Gloria. She didn't know anyone or anything at all. She met a little girl named Madeline, and was taught about love." She continued her story while Andrew quietly took Madeline's spirit back to Heaven.
