Chapter Two

It had been three weeks after moving to Washington and I was settled in completely to my rental house and loving my classes at college. I hadn't really seen much of the town due to being so focused on unpacking and on my coursework; today I wanted to change that. I only had enough money to pay for three months worth of rent and my meals that weren't provided at college; I needed to find a job soon.

I take a walk into Clara's, a diner I had found after doing some sightseeing in town and sat down at one of the vinyl booths waiting for the fifty-sixty something year old waitress to come to the table. Glancing around I noticed the walls had framed black and white autographed photos of old Hollywood movie stars from the forties to the late sixties. The place had an old timey feel to it, but it wasn't exactly a retro diner. The only thing antique had to be the record player sitting over in the corner with a space big enough for a few couples to dance.

"Welcome to Clara's doodle bug, I'm Amy, and I'll be serving you today. What can I get for you?" I looked down at the laminated menu before me quickly deciding on what to get.

"I'll have the all American burger with onion rings and a cherry coke, thanks." She smiled and wrote down my order on her notepad and with her hand on her hips she stared down at me. "You must be new here, don't have too many visitors 'round these parts." I nodded shyly not sure of what to say.

"I'll go put this order in and I'll be right back with your soda pop, darling." With that the older Lucille Ball look alike with red dyed hair took off to the kitchen of the diner and disappeared for some time.

I had been half-way through eating my meal when I heard the doorbell ring - signaling that someone was entering the dinner. I fought the urge to turn my head and look nosily to see who had entered since I was facing the opposite direction. It didn't take too long before I saw pair of dark brown rugged Timberland Earthkeepers making their way to very last booth. Their owner slid in and though his back was facing me I could tell exactly who he was.

Amy chose that moment to come back to my table to refill my almost empty glass of coke. "Here you go, now can I get some dessert for you? You have to try my famous apple pie; I'll even give you a slice free of charge." I laughed and nodded.

"Sure, why not?" she went to pull away but I put my hand out on her arm to stop her, "Wait a moment!" she turned around and looked back at me with raised brows.

"I needed to know if you had any jobs available. I need to earn some money since I just moved here. I am trustworthy and reliable and I promise that I will be willing to do whatever to help." At first she looked hopeful but a cough from the man in the booth several tables ahead made her turn her head and afterward changed her expression as she looked at me.

"I'm sorry to say we don't have any openings as you can tell this place is empty most of time unless it's the weekend or lunch hour. James and I run this place just fine and we have Gracie that helps us out on weekends, but I do know a place that's been looking for some help." A smile took over my face as I was relieved to hear some positive news for once.

"That's great; I'd love to check it out if you don't mind directing me." She went to pull out her pen and notepad to write something down but that very moment her pen ran out ink.

"Let me go get a fresh pen and I'll give you the directions." She left my table once more and I looked to see the guy from my college art class staring out the glass window watching people pass him by. I was curious to know more about him so I got up and walked over to his booth.
