Once, I lost a day
That slipped from between my grasp
But remained emblazoned in my mind
Until the end of time
I met people on that day,
People held dear in my heart,
But their faces are all a blur
And the place is distorted
Into images of home,
Sand, grass, river, expressions,
But none so clear
As the look on my mother's face.
Her eyes were smiling,
Lips pulling into a genuine expression
Of laughter
She glowed as she sat beside my father
Youthfulness spread across her features
But that day,
That day I lost,
Does not exist any more
And I am afraid
That my mother's smile
Is lost.
