(Un)Natural Hybrids

Chapter 3

The night was still and calm, cloudless and dotted with stars. The soft glow of the moon illuminated the tropical forests of Isla Nublar.

The breeze was calm, yet cool, carrying the salty scent of the nearby sea.

The low lying ferns were still, trees alive with a chorus of insects.

Roberta lay beside her tiny chicks—a mere bundle of thin bodies and fragile scales. The Spinosaurus lay on the other side, his tail partially curling around his bulky mate's body. His breath was slow and calm, emerald eyes closed in a faint torpor. His clawed fingers twitched in his sleep, snore akin to crocodilian hiss.

The Queen's amber eyes looked upon her sailed mate, to her young.

Their babies.

All five of them.

All their five little babies, snuggling together in a peaceful slumber.

The Tyrannus could hardly believe she was a mother.

That she could create something so fragile and small.

Something so precious.

She wished her eyes were better, so she could see her hatchlings more.

Roberta's thick neck rose, and craned. Her massive head tilted, lower jaw levitating ever so slightly over the fragile scales of her young. She could feel the warmth their tiny bodies emitted.

She could hear the gentle breaths of her heirs.

They were peaceful.

And they were safe, nestled between the bellies of the King and Queen.

A pleased rumble escaped the Queen's scarred throat.

Her neck then twisted, and her broad snout then moved to tenderly nuzzle her mate's own.

The Bull's eyelids fluttered, and his emerald eyes cracked open. Her serpent like pupils were sharp and narrowed, faintly glowing in the dark of the night.

Though he did not raise his head, the Spinosaurus did tilt his snout to press against Roberta.

A pleased rumble escaped him, and the heat of his breath mingled with his Queen's.

Their eyes locked.

Amber met emerald.

Emerald met amber.

Then their eyes flicked towards their babies.

Watching the tiny lives they made sleep within the safety of Nublar's Rulers.
