Waking up, I realized how tired I was from being up till 2 am talking to Alex on the phone. We were both excited about the date at least I could say that for sure because he couldn't stop talking about how excited he was to see me again. I had expressed how nervous I was because I was doing this for the first time and he had assured me I would be fine.
We had decided to go see a recent Marvel film that was in the cinemas. I wasn't initially interested because I only thrive on Korean dramas. But we made a deal that he would watch a K-drama with me in exchange for my going to the movies with him, even
though I knew I might have little or no understanding of what I was going to see as I thought Marvel movies were too complex to not start from the very first. Surprisingly, he agreed to this.I got ready and stood in front of the mirror while putting on earrings and a necklace and fixing the wig I was wearing. I immediately realized I was humming a tune which made me cringe hard since I knew I was doing it out of enthusiasm. On second thought, maybe it was okay for me to feel enthusiastic about seeing a guy since, as Sharon mentioned it could lead to something serious, and my single self would be proud I was able to get myself a boyfriend. I smiled at the reflection in the mirror, before grabbing my bag and walking out of my room to the hallway.
I had Sharon pick me up since I had told Sister Vivian that I was hanging out with the girls. I knew she wasn't convinced enough so I knew going out on my own would only add to her suspicion.
While I was eating breakfast in the dining room, Sharon called to let me know that she was waiting outside the house. I quickly ate the entire piece of toasted bread before heading out the door.
"You look stunning" Sharon complimented me as I sat down on the passenger seat. She had this wide smile of awe on her face which felt like she was having one of the proudest moments of her life.
I smiled. "Thanks boo. I'm surprised you agreed to come to pick me up when I called yesterday night"
"It's nothing jare. I told you this weekend is for you oh. We must find that boyfriend for you" She replied smiling sarcastically.
"Whatever" I rolled my eyes. "Are you and Rachel still coming tomorrow?" I asked
"Oh yeah definitely"
We arrived at Alex's place and Sharon insisted I waited in her car till he came out and no, not because she was been overprotective of me well, she can be sometimes, but she wanted to see what he looked like in person because she and Rachel had only seen a picture of him.
It was also her idea to drive me over to his place as she as told me she was invested in my dating life because if it were up to me, I wouldn't put forth the effort she is now.
Prior to leaving the house, I texted him to let him know I was on my way, and he replied that he was ready.
"Omo he is much finer in person," Sharon said with her jaw dropped as Alex heads out of the gate.
"Hhmmm hmm" I muttered nodding in agreement, admiring this tall brown-skinned guy who had a fresh haircut and a nicely trimmed beard making him more attractive than I had imagined him to be.
"I was most definitely not paying attention to this fine man when we first met at the cafeteria because how the heck did I choose to ignore his message in the first place?" These were the thoughts running through my head as I continued to stare from where I was seated.
He was wearing a blue and black checkered long sleeve button-down shirt, black jeans, and perfectly matched white sneakers.
"Jane your phone is ringing" Sharon patted my shoulder.
I flinched and immediately grabbed my phone from my bag. It was Alex calling and I realized that I had been distracted and should have called him that I waiting in Sharon's car.
"Hey, I'm already here, I see you" I stuttered, immediately feeling anxious at the sight of him. Getting down from the car, I see Sharon do the same which made me surprised.
"Sharon, what are you doing?" I asked
"To meet your boyfriend, duhh" She replied
"Sharon???? I said giving her a long stare
"Relax, just a brief introduction that's all, I'll leave soon" She approaches Alex who already noticed us and was looking somewhat perplexed only by his facial expression.
I immediately followed her just to make sure she didn't cause any embarrassment
"Hello, I'm Sharon" She reached out and shook his hand
Hi, I'm Alex" He said giving her a bewildered expression. He glances at me in an attempt read my expression for an explanation, but I immediately gestured a comforting look that he understood.
"Look at us gesturing to each other, we are totally meant to be," I thought to myself smiling.
"Ohh I'm Jane's best friend," She said after noticing the slight confusion. "I just wanted to make sure she's safe I'll be leaving now.
"Ohhh, nice to meet you, Sharon, I've heard lovely things about you"
"Really, same here too, Jane talks about you non-stop"
I pinched her giving her that same long stare I always give when she tries to be annoying.
"Ow, fine I'm leaving now, have fun you two" She smiled
"Byee" I retorted as I watched her walk toward the car.
I turned my face towards the ground feeling tensed and abruptly went blank causing an awkward silence between us.
"I finally get to meet you in person again," Alex remarked, breaking the awkward pause.
"Yeah," I replied shyly averting his gaze.
He leaned in me to give me a polite hug, but I impulsively returned with a side hug
"Ohh, yeah, sorry about that" I stuttered. "Why did I just apologize for that, God I feel so stupid," I thought to myself, hoping for the ground to open up and swallow me
No no, it's fine" he replied
Our eyes meet for a second and we burst into laughter which finally eased the weird atmosphere between us.
"I feel embarrassed by what Sharon said. She's lying though" I said
"There is nothing to be ashamed about, she's funny, I like her vibe too" He replied smiling
"Yeah, me too"
"You look so beautiful by the way," he said admiring my look
"Thanks, you don't look bad yourself" I replied shyly.
"Thank you, I try my best, he smiled "I think our ride is here," he said as a camry car approaches our direction.
