"On the count of 3! 1, 2, 3!" Field marshal Harold bellowed.

As I looked around and took in my surroundings, I noticed everyone was charging in the direction to the enemy camp... Apart from me.

It felt as if I lost all the feeling in my legs. I couldn't bring myself to move.

It felt wrong for some weird reason. I've done this many times before but today I couldn't bring myself to do it.

"What are you doing Lenehan?!?" Lee howled from besides me.

He kept nudging my shoulder and pushing me forward to get me to move.

"I-I-I feel sick" I mumbled.

I didn't actually feel sick, it was just an excuse. I don't know why I can't do this. This had to be at least my 20th time at invading the enemy camp.

Something just felt off. There was no other way to explain it.

Why am I here? I asked myself as I stood there glued to the spot I stood on. I didn't want to kill these people, they had never done any thing to me. We got told we were fighting for freedom but freedom from what?

What even was the point of me being here?!?

I've thought these thoughts many times before. There was no way of escaping them. Jesus Christ I was having an existential crisis in no mans land.

"I don't care if you feel sick, son! All I care about is winning this war. And we're not gonna win it with you just standing there. Now move, Lenehan, before I blow your balls off" Lee commanded.

With that I quickly fumbled to get my gun into position and took off into the middle of no mans land. Shells flew over my head, some landing just a couple yards from me; but that didn't stop me.

Just a few meter's away that's all. All I need to run is a few meters, I feel dizzy. I can make it, I can do it I keep telling myself.

No, no I can't.

I feel as if I'm about to collapse. This has never happened before. Right before I made it to the German front lines, avoiding the bullets they shoot my way, everything went black.

I awoke what must have been at least 3 hours later. My head was pounding and I had yet to open my eyes.

Just as I opened my eyes, I saw a sight I never wanted to see.

Right between my eyebrows was the barrel of a gun.

At the end of the gun was a smirking, cunning German

"Surprise bitch"
