3)A Degree Deferred and Dignity Destroyed

“Mr. Park,” he said, voice like steel. “You’re late.”

“Just five minutes—” I panted, “I had to—”

“No excuses.”

He stood. Not even giving me time to breathe, let alone explain.

“This is a formal academic presentation, not a casual gathering. We don’t wait on students who can’t respect the importance of punctuality.”

“I do respect it! I had to finalize something important this morning, I tried to call—”

"But I'm just 5 min late " Jimin reasoned.

“Five minutes late is still late,” he snapped, his voice slicing through my explanation. “This isn’t about excuses, it’s about priority. Clearly, your priorities are elsewhere.”

I swallowed hard. “I’ve worked on this thesis for a year—”

“Then you should’ve shown up on time to defend it.”

Silence fell over the room.

The other two professors exchanged uncomfortable glances, but no one said anything. No one interrupted him. Because who would dare argue with Professor Jeon?

"But according to the rules 5 min late is not punishable "

"But you are 5 min and 57 seconds late... Hence practically you are late more than 5 min " Mr Jeon said raising an eye brow.

While the students started whispering and the other teachers also sighed by this new professor.

'" Sir you can't be fussing with this 57 second right " I chuckle awkwardly.

"Why isn't 5 min 57 seconds not more than 5 min?? " I nodded.

"Then you are late and your thesis is failed." He declared.

"Mr Jeon umm don't be this strict " The other teacher sitting beside him said .

"Rules are rules and do you even know in this 57 seconds people can do so many things... Air travels from here to there within seconds and you are saying 57 seconds doesn't matter? " The teachers are so done with him... They look at me with an apologetic look.

"Sir I tried my best to rush here... I had some important work that's why im late... Plzz have some mercy for the sake of my 4 year of college I didn't mean it " I pleaded.

" Are you a statistics major? " Mr jeon asked suddenly.

I nodded.

"What's the definition of statistics " He again asked.

"Statistics is a comprehensive discipline that we can analyze and organize data accurately to infer the essence of things and even predict the future " I said looking at the podium eyes down.

"You are right.... To analyze and organize the data accurately , you are not allowed to be over 5 min lste according to the school rules , take it as a cardinal number and then set the time , you are 19% late than the set time so as a statistics major plzz answer me , do you think an error rate up to 19% can accepted in statistics " I sighed deeply.... I felt like I can't even breathe anymore....
I felt my eyes getting heavy... Tears already brimming there.

"Jimin your time is over.... Miss Young call next one " He literally dismissed me just like a stray dog on the street.

I picked my bag and was about to come down but stopped and again looked at jungkook " You are really the most rigorous teacher I've ever seen Mr Jeon " I was walking out when Mr jeon called "hold on...... Most mean teacher haa??? Before coming to that proposition You have to see all the teachers in the world then only you can get this conclusion . ... So tell me have you ever met all the teachers in the world??? " I kept silent... Clutching my fist more tightly which turned my knuckles to white out of enough embarrassment for today.
