The alarm goes off signalling the start of a new day. Ink Comyet groans, trying and failing to hit his incessantly loud phone. He tries again and hears the familiar sound of his phone hitting the floor.
"Oh shit."
Ink mumbles as he slides out of bed onto the floor, where he checks his battered phone for damage before turning the alarm off. Today was the first day of 12th grade and Ink wasn't planning on being late. He grabs his phone and changes into his quirky outfit. He trudges downstairs and makes himself a coffee. Ink's mother had left for work earlier so he had the house all to himself. His phone dings.

'Hey U awake?'

The text was from his friend Dream.

'Yeah. U ready for school?'

'DEFINITELY.'

Ink laughed. Dream loved schoolwork. He was pretty sure Dream was the only individual in the whole country to enjoy school this much.

'See ya there'

Ink texted back.

'Yeah. See U.'

                              ----)(----

As Ink walked through the school gates he saw his friends Dream and Fern standing by the big oak tree. Fern was a human, strictly speaking but he always seemed more relaxed near monsters. Dream was a bubbly skeleton like himself. Ink walked towards his friends and as he neared them Fern snapped his head around to look at Ink with his strange violet eyes.

"Hey Ink. How was your holiday?"

Fern asks

"It was nice. How was yours?"

Fern took a moment to answer.

"The deterioration's getting worse. My flesh is disappearing faster than body can regenerate it."

"So not good."

As Fern was about to answer, Dream cut in.

"Look. Ink it's your crush"

Ink turned to the school gates and saw that it was indeed his crush, Error.

"Hey. shush he'll hear."

Ink says, looking worried that Error may have heard. Error on the other hand, showed no sign of hearing anything whatsoever. Fern spoke up.

"Whatever. Let's just get to class"

                                ----)(----

Ink walked into his class and sat down in the back row. He hoped their teacher would be nice. It occurred to Ink that there were no humans in any of his classes, except for Fern. Fern had explained to him that humans and monsters were separated. The only reason Fern was in the monsters classes was because Fern kept on coming, no matter how many times he was kicked out. Eventually the teachers gave up on Fern. Ink wondered why humans and monsters were separated. It made no sense.

"Hey Ink. I'mma gonna take this seat."

It was Fern. Dream sat a row in front of him. Ink scanned the room for Error and saw him sitting on the opposite side of the room.

"Ok class settle down."

A motherly voice called out. Ink looked at the teacher and was extremely surprised. The teacher was a monster.

"I am miss Dreemurr and I will be taking your classes for this year."

Ink wondered how much work this lady put into becoming qualified to be a teacher. But then he became distracted by a bird outside and completely zoned out.

"Ink. What's the answer to question 6?"

"Huh? What?"

Ink looked at the blackboard, now covered with equations. He had no idea.

"Sorry miss. I wasn't paying attention."

"Mr Comyet. May I speak to you after class?"

Ink gulped. This happened all too often. He wasn't embarrassed about being called out. It was that although his new teacher seemed kind, he knew that others were not. Other teachers like Mr Hayes who hit the monster kids with rulers and Mrs Smith who swore and yelled at them. As the lesson continued Ink began drawing in his notebook. He glanced at the clock. It was almost lunchtime. He closed his notebook and stuffed it in his bag just as the bell rang. Ink nervously made his way up to the teacher.

"Y-you wanted to see me miss?"

"Yes Mr Comyet. I've found that you are finding it a little difficult to pay attention. Would you like me to do one on one lessons with you? Would that be easier?"

Ink was surprised. No teacher had ever been this kind to him.

"Yes. That would help a lot."

This is how half of Ink's lunch was spent, getting help and advice from his teacher.

                                 ---)(---

"Dude did you get detention?"

Fern asked as Ink approached their hangout spot.

"No. Miss Dreemurr just gave me a recap of the lesson."

"You're lucky. I was listening the whole time but I didn't get anything."

Dream, who was sitting in the oak tree sighed.

"Both of you need concentration pills or something."

Ink couldn't agree more. It was common knowledge that Fern and Ink had very bad grades, barely passing each year. Fern, on the other hand, was very offended.

"It's not my fault that my magic hurts so much, I can't concentrate."

Ink wondered what he meant. Did his magic hurt? He was surprised Fern had never told him. Dream didn't look surprised.

"Get pain medication Fern."

Dream says, sounding like he had gone over this many times. Ink was cut in before they started arguing.

"Hey guys. We're in 12th grade. You know what that means? We can join clubs!"

Dream and Fern looked at Ink, surprised.

"We can join clubs!?"

They said simultaneously.

"I thought that was a 'human only' thing."

Dream said. Fern looked at Dream, shocked.

"I didn't know you could just join clubs."

Ink saw another sign of injustice. Humans could join extracurricular activities from 9th grade while monsters barely ever got the chance. He wanted to do something about it. Hell. He needed change the bloody law. Ink thought.

This is my first time writing a story about Ink and Error and the others so please go easy on me. Actually this is the first time I've ever written on Wattpad. I accept all helpful criticism.
