Chapter 1: First Day.

I still remember it, crystal clear like something happening in front of my eye right now, which is my class, Ancient History, Greek to be exact. In the past I always found an interest in it, but now in every class, I just found myself slipping into a daydream of flashback and seeing the last time I saw mom and dad.

I wrote down notes, even though I weren’t paying attention, I’d check at the end of the lesson and somehow I’d wrote notes that I were meant to take, it was weird.

Now Darcie and I had been at Quincy Senior high school for a few weeks now, she was fitting in well, with her arts, so it was happy to see her smiling, although I hadn’t made any effort to make friends or even try to join any sort of clubs, Darcie had and I was happy that she were.

I was quiet except in English, when most of the lessons turned into debates and Mr. Connor’s was interested in my opinion, he was in his late 40’s maybe early 50’s, he had black hair but at the sides it was slightly greying, which I found quite cute. After class though, some would call me a geek and a teacher’s pet and he would call me to his desk and let me talk to him about how I felt, Louisa had asked if I wanted a therapist but I know they’d only supply me with anti-depressants, that’s what happened to Darcie’s dad and I’d rather just go mental naturally.

In additional science, I was partnered with Matt for chemistry, my next door neighbour, I’d seen him a couple times, he’d sweetly smiled at me and I tried to smile, but I always looked so blank, like I’d forgotten how to smile, maybe even laugh.

“So what you want to do first? Equipment or safety shit?” He said, leaning over the lab desk, his eyes were a soft blue and even though I hadn’t really looked at a boy in weeks, not since I left everyone in New York, I felt the need to look at him, his whole body. He was athletic, just like his older brother and even though I’d been silent for weeks, I had a need to speak and couldn’t find words.

“I don’t mind, I’m not really used to doing experiments, so you might have to guide me,” I said, trying to sound flirty, he grinned, rubbing his hands through his hair.

“So how you fitting in? Chicago must be a big difference from New York,” He asked, I just nodded, for once when I wanted to speak, my voice betrayed me.

“I erm...heard about you and your cousin, I mean it’s not much big news or anything but I’m sorry for your loss...” He whispered, now he was standing next to me, I could feel his breath close to me and I could smell he was chewing mint gum, I blushed and felt the warmth come back to my cheeks, a warmth I hadn’t felt since the night in the restaurant...

“It’s okay,” I managed to choke out, I felt my eyes watering, but kept blinking.

I got through the lesson and learned I hadn’t turned completely hopeless and even though I kept remembering, I was able to smile. When I met Darcie outside the school, ready to walk back to our new home, Darcie went on about her art class and I listened, this time not drifting off into the horrific past, I actually enjoyed her excitement, so when I got in smiling, Louisa beamed at us, even Esme could tell something had changed and giggled.

“What has happened then Ava?” She leaned on the breakfast club next to Esme’s high chair, I shrugged, blushing again.

“A boy!” Louisa said to herself and clapped, continuing feeding her child, Darcie and I escaped to our room and I flopped down on the small sofa bed in the middle of our room.
