Lee Jieun's POV
It's been weeks since summer break started. The sun was always up and high on its own glory. Everyone were busy planning their summer trips; unravelling through every nooks of every country. They seems to be having fun though.
Meanwhile, here I am. Alone. I've been used to it anyway. Mom and Dad has been always busy with their job - our family business; managing our family restaurant and the most recent, the café that just opened not long ago. I am glad because we have some source of income and thus, I can able to live my life in comfy.
But at the same time, it saddens me. Because it steal almost all the time that my parents should spend with me, for our family.
I have a brother, and he prefer spending his life alone in his room. Huddled in front of his computer, while playing the very recent online games. Or outside, with his friends.
Sighs. Sighs. Sighs.
"It's so quiet. What to do?"
10:00 am reads on our digital clock.
This is what I don't like about school breaks. I have nothing to do but to wait for the days to pass, as if I am just flipping the pages of my life. Skipping those boring and useless chapters.
Lee Jieun. 16 year old and a freshman. In just more than two weeks, vacation will finally be over and the new semester will finally start. I can't wait to see school, though it sounds weird of me. But at least, I could able to make my self busy and productive everyday. Listening to the cacophony of laughters and banters of every students in our school. It seems a music in my ear. I'd rather listen to those kind of noise than this quite, inexistent noise lingering on every corner of our house. It irked me for some reason, maybe because I want to hear voices.
I miss our old home.
----
Ding dong. Ding dong. Ding dong.
"Ugh.. Who's that?" Awaken by the series of rings on my phone and the seeming endless echo of our doorbell. I fell asleep.
My bed hair that almost resembles a bird's nest, donning those fluffy pastel pink bunny slippers Suzy gave me last Christmas. I felt like a walking zombie in her pajamas as I approach for the door.
Did my brother left? Why didn't he open the door.
"I went out to my friend's house. I'll be back in a while. Tell mom and dad for me, okay?"
"Everyone's having fun, eh?" I let out a soft inaudible sigh at the thought, when all of a sudden the doorbell rings again and followed by the loud knock against the wooden door.
"JIEUN-AH! JIEUN-AH! Open the door! Are you the--"
"Suzy! What brings you here? I thought you'll be lea--"
"Yes! Yes! That's just what I am about to say." Seems like she noticed the quizzical look painted all over my face, and so she proceed.
"Okay. So I actually asked my parents if you could tag along with us. And without further ado, they agreed! They even suggested bringing your whole family."
"But they can't,"
"Exactly! I told them so, so they said bring you alone instead and your brother. That is if he wants to."
"He's not home. And he would probably choose to stay home than go somewhere without his friends or at least mom and dad.
For a very short second, I saw that I'm-sorry look on her face. I know she knew me very well and she knows I feel lonely despite everything I have. And I am glad that she's always there for me. She makes me feel happy at times I feel like I'm the saddest person on earth.
"Ah! I should prepare now. It will be quick," I smiled at her, a genuine smile. "Suit yourself, eo!"
My voice lingers on the hallway to our room, as I vanish at her sight. My mind went frantic. This was all so sudden and I don't know which to do first. My room is in mess; unfinished bed, half consumed bottle and can of juice and soda, and emptied packs of chips, scattered on and around the bedside table to the floor. I ate everything last night and still hadn't bussed them out.
12:35 pm
I hurriedly slipped every decent and comfy summer clothes I have in my bag. Clothes that will be good for a week. And a couple of pairs, just in case.
I changed into a comfy plain oversized white shirt and shorts; not too shirt though. Just an inch above my knees. I combed through my disheveled hair as I look through my indescribably cringe-worthy look. Did I gain weight again? I need to manage my diet. My fringe grew longer and my glasses seems crooked. I need to..
"Jieun-ah! Are you done now?"
My train of thoughts or rather insecurities was cut short by Suzy's voice.
"Coming!" Hastily scribbled down a note on a blank paper before dashing to where Suzy is. She seems didn't do anything but sit down on our upholstered couch. "Let's go?" I followed her out the door after sticking the note I wrote on the fridge; next to my brother's.
I didn't expect her family parked just right in front our house. A crimson 2015 Toyota Tacoma, with the trunk stuffed with what I suppose to be their things. It seems like we'll be gone for a month or more. Anyway, Suzy's dad has been working in well-known car company and her mom, stays at home.
"Jieun-ah!" Mrs. Bae has been smiling ear to ear the moment I emerged out of our front door. She seems like a kid, and I feel at ease whenever I am with them. I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind as long as I am with the Bae family. "Glad you're tagging along." Her husband, Suzy's dad, Mr. Bae, waves his hand at me and I bowed slightly in return.
"I am very happy you invited me. I actually didn't expect it" I scratched my nape bashfully as Suzy inconspicuously put my bag in the trunk.
"Let's go!"
