The rain in Amsterdam didn't just fall; it reclaimed the city. As the silver Volkswagen slipped through the narrow, glistening streets of the Zuidas district, the neon signs of the financial hub blurred into long, distorted streaks of amber and electric blue.
Jin drove with a mechanical precision, his eyes scanning every alleyway and parked vehicle for the tell-tale signs of a tail. In the back seat, Tina sat huddled over her Toshiba, the pale light of the screen reflecting in her wide, haunted eyes. In the back, Arya checked the action on her sidearm, the metallic clack-slide of the weapon the only sound in the cabin.
They pulled into the underground garage of a nondescript apartment complex-an NIS safe house hidden in plain sight. It was a "cold" site, meant for deep-cover operatives, smelling of dust, ozone, and old coffee.
As soon as the heavy steel door clicked shut behind them, Jin moved to the corner of the room, activating a localized frequency scrambler before dialing a priority-one secured line.
"Director," Jin said, his voice dropping into the low, gravelly register he used when the world was on the line. "We've reached the Amsterdam safe house. We have the 'Eleventh Uno' with us."
On the other end of the line, the NIS Chief's voice sounded like sandpaper on glass. "Seokjin. I've been staring at the countdown for three hours. The Prime Minister is calling every twenty minutes. The global infrastructure is already showing tremors. Do you truly believe you can secure the antivirus within the deadline? We are less than six hours from total systemic collapse."
Jin looked at Tina, who was frantically scrolling through lines of code, her brow furrowed in a mask of frustration. "I'm not giving up yet, sir," Jin replied, his gaze hardening. "If Tina can't synthesize an antivirus from the NASA signal, I've decided on an alternative. I'm going to steal the master copy directly from Dr. Van Buren."
There was a long, heavy silence on the line. "That is a suicide mission, Seokjin," the Chief said calmly. "Douglas Bullock-has eyes everywhere. He knows you're coming for the cure. He will try to stop you, and he doesn't care about collateral damage."
"I know the risks, sir. But if the world is going to end at two in the morning, I'd rather go down fighting than sit here watching a progress bar."
"Godspeed, Seokjin. Best of luck. The agency is standing by for your signal."
While Jin remained on the phone, coordinating with the local Amsterdam branch for supplies, Arya and Tina migrated to the small, cramped kitchen. The safe house was sparsely furnished, but the pantry was stocked with high-protein rations and, most importantly, a pot of strong, bitter Dutch coffee.
Arya poured two mugs, the steam rising in thin, ghostly ribbons between them. They sat at the small wooden table, the silence of the apartment pressing in on them. Through the doorway, they could see the back of Jin's head as he stood by the window, his shoulders broad and tense.
Tina wrapped her hands around her mug, seeking the warmth. She watched Jin for a long moment before speaking. "He is an incredible man, Arya," she said softly, her voice lacking the defensive edge it had held on the train.
Arya followed her gaze, a soft, weary smile touching her lips. "No doubt about that. He's... a force of nature."
Tina tilted her head, a flicker of a memory dancing in her eyes. "He's that boy, isn't he? The one you used to tell me about when we were back at the university? The one who lived in your stories but never in your present?"
Arya squinted, her brow furrowing as she tried to reach back into the foggy corridors of her own mind. "Did I tell you about him?"
"You don't remember?" Tina asked, surprised. "You used to talk about a boy from your youth like he was a ghost you were trying to catch."
