Okay so the parts that are in italics and 3rd person pov are flashbacks (except for text messages). There aren't specific times. It could be anything from when Lucas was fostered by Madison's family to when they were growing up and living their own lives. I hope that makes sense and I hope you guys are enjoying the story!

3rd person pov
Madison got up from the couch like her mom asked and went to Lucas' room. She was going to knock but the door was left wide open and she was taken by surprise. Her mouth fell open at the burn scar that covered almost half his back, part of the right side of his neck, and part of his right arm.

"My goodness" she said kind of instinctively before he turned to her and quickly grabbed a long sleeve.

"I thought everyone was downstairs" he said after pulling it over his head.

"I uh came to tell you dinner was ready0.

"Okay".

"What happened?" she asked and he looked for a second before speaking again.

"You have an accent you know" he said before she laughed.

"Not as much as Nora".

"Well no, but weren't you born in Missouri?"

"Yea, I guess Albany has really rubbed off on me after like 10 years".

"It definitely has. I'll uh be down in a minute".

"Alright" she said with a half smile before leaving.

Lucas' pov
I woke up at around 930 which was late for me. I stayed up until 3 working on this case. Over the last week we had gotten three tips about maybe seeing her in a store or at a park or something. When we got there though, no one had any idea where that person went. We checked street cameras and eventually concluded each one as a false alarm.

Today I didn't plan on working though. It was Kay's birthday. Or at least it would've been. Every year since she passed, Sadie and I celebrate together and I try not to work. I've been successful the last few years so I hope to keep it that way. It was a Friday though so we'll see.

"Morning" Sadie said as I got out into the kitchen.

"Morning kid. How'd you sleep?"

"Good enough. I wanted to get up early and make the pancakes".

"Well thank you" I said as she nodded and flipped the two in front of her. Pancakes were Kay's favorite breakfast so it was a tradition.

"What do you want to do today?" I asked as she put them on plates and grabbed a couple of candles.

"Uh can we go to the park again".

"Again?" I asked.

"Mhm. We can ride bikes".

"Okay let's do it. You light those and I'm gonna grab the picture" I said getting up again.

Another tradition was that I gave her one photograph every year. Kay loved pictures so when we could afford it she'd buy a few disposable cameras and take as many as she could. Then we would get the photos developed and keep them. So now Sadie was slowly making a photo album from them.

"Alright, this first" she said about the candles then we blew them out together. "Happy birthday mom" she smiled.

"Happy birthday baby" I kind of mumbled under my breath before sliding her the photograph. I started talking while we ate.

"So a few months before your mom got pregnant we stayed with this older woman who lived by herself and offered to let us stay. We paid rent and worked a shit ton but on the occasional time we both had free days, we'd do date nights in the house" I started as she looked at Kay and I in the photo.
