~ Deeply entrenched in a war-laden era is an unlikely romance that blossoms between a young maiden and a young marshal. Lin Hang Jing has always considered Xiao Bei Chen to be a cruel man who wants her even though she has already found her first love. During the Warlords Era, the young and talented Lin Hang Jing had to flee after her father was wrongly imprisoned. She seeks refuge from her father's good friend General Xiao and lives humbly and without complaints as she relied on their charity.

The Xiao family's overbearing young master, Xiao Bei Chen, first starts bullying Lin Hang Jing but gradually has a change of heart when he becomes attracted to her quiet confidence. General Shuai sends his son to military school for training. Seventh Aunt promises to arrange a match between Xiao Bei Chen and Lin Hang Jing after he returns.

Through five years of grueling training under the strict instruction of the military officers, Xiao Bei Chen is no longer the boy he once was but a hardened soldier who has experienced the harsh realities of war. Upon his return, Xiao Bei Chen aids his father in running the army and intends to propose to Lin Hang Jing. Alas, he learns that she has fallen in love with a hot-blooded youth named Mu Zi Zheng. In order to save Lin Hang Jing's father, Lin Hang Jing and Xiao Bei Chen agree to get married even if they have already become alienated from each other due to many misunderstandings. In a time of war when the Japanese seeks to expand its territory by invading China, Lin Hang Jing persuades Xiao Bei Chen to stand up for the people.

Early in the twentieth century, the Republic of China was struggling to establish itself, despite the looming threat to its sovereignty from the Imperial Japan. During this uncertain time, hot-headed teen Xiao Bei Chen was quickly maturing. He routinely bullied Lin Hang Jing, the girl his family had given refuge. She met his intimidation with such resilience and determination that his admiration for her grew. As their romance bloomed, Xiao Bei Chen learned that his future would involve several years of Military College. Before leaving, he secured a promise from his family, allowing him to wed Lin Hang Jing upon graduating.

Five years later, he arrived home and found the hand in marriage of his beloved promised to a Mu Zi Zheng. No longer a bully, he had grown into a focused young man, so with steely determination, he plotted to win back Lin Hang Jing's heart. However, in 1937, the second Sino-Japanese War broke out, dashing his romantic plans. Now all three had to choose a side, knowing that their future decisions could impact not only them but the destinies of thousands of others.
