[ chanhoon. | chan + jihoon ]

[ first of all, i am not that familiar with volleyball; rules, mechanics, positions. i only know some information because of watching haikyuu. anyways, enjoy ! ]

chan sat on the bench, sulking. he watched as his team practice on the court. they were doing an all nighter for this practice, it's only a week left before the spring tournament's finals. if they win this, they'll get a ticket for nationals. and that is a big opportunity.

sure, their past opponents during tournament were pretty good but not quite challenging.

and since making it to finals, their opponent, is not worth slacking for.

they heard, this opponent was the powerhouse in their school. this star team had also gone to nationals, but the thing is, they didn't come home with the trophy. meaning this was their chance to take it this year.

there were thirteen of them, and only six players should stand on the court. being divided into two groups to train, six members on each side there stood, meaning one of them had to be benched. and that just happened to be chan.

every set, their positions would rotate, and for now, chan had to wait for his turn.

he isn't one of the tall players like mingyu, he isn't the strongest spikers like soonyoung, he isn't the one with the brains like wonwoo either. i mean, he would if he tried.

he wanted to stand out on the court, all eyes on him. he always wanted the title, "seventeen's ace."

but unfortunately, he is just an understudy libero. he isn't their official libero, that's not his position, it's jihoon's.

and speaking of jihoon, he sees his hyung approaching him. it seems like the match is paused for now, they've been practicing for hours now and what their bodies need at the moment is rest.

"hey." jihoon says, sitting down on beside chan, drinking from a water bottle. he passes it to chan once he was done. "o-oh, thanks hyung." chan takes the bottle and takes a gulp, eyes not leaving the court. he wonders how would it feel to be the center.

jihoon notices, "hey. you're zoning out." he nudges him, making chan turn to face him.

jihoon was taken aback, their faces were inches apart. he was about to move away but chan suddenly blurted out, "jihoon hyung, what does being in the libero position mean to you?"

the sophomore was shocked by the sudden question. "oh, well..being a libero isn't just a position so that short people could take part, no, it's much more than that.

you see, a libero is the main defense in the court. everyone relies on you to save the ball, to keep it in the air for our team mates to attack, that's our purpose.

we may not be useful in terms of air battles, we couldn't block, we couldn't spike, we couldn't toss but the land on our side of the court, is ours. they are the attackers, and we are the defenders in the court, in our team. we each play our own part, but our actions connects as one whole. we are just as worthy as them." jihoon finishes, standing up.

chan looked dazed, eyes sparked with determination.

"hyung!" he stood up as well, holding both jihoon's hands in his. "teach me on how to be a better defense. i want to win and go to nationals!" he exclaims, echoing in the gym.

everyone heard his outburst, some giggled, some smiled. of course, everyone wanted to go to the nationals, they wanted to represent their group, their country after all. and, if they lose the tournament, their juniors (3rd years), would be replaced next year. meaning, this is their last and only shot to give their 3rd years a chance to go to nationals with them.
