Buzzing.
Throbbing.
Pain.

Louder buzzing.
Increased throbbing.
More intense pain.

No buzzing.
No throbbing.
No pain.

His eyes opened slowly. Everything was outlined red and green. Then it all came into focus.

He was lying on a bed; so were the others- the entire recon team, in fact. Several sticks stood near a set of double oak doors: Second, Blue, Purple, Metsa, Uni, Multi, Elemental, Ragey, and Purity. They all seemed quite uneasy- some of them shifted their feet, others repeatedly clasped and unclasped their hands.

He tried to say something to them, like, "Hey." But instead of that, what came out of his mouth was, "Uhguhugugughughughuh..."

They all jumped. Blue immediately ran over and seized his head. "Ow!" he yelped.

"Stay still!" Blue ordered.

He stood still.

Blue unwrapped bandages from around his head and tossed them into a nearby recycle bin. "Does it hurt?"

"No."

"Okay." Blue stood up straight. "You're good to go."

"Thanks." He got up and looked at the others lying in bed.

"Wait..."

He turned to look at the sticks standing next to the doorway. "Where's Spartan?"

All the sticks' faces paled.

"What?"

Metsa stepped forward nervously. "Um... you see... he, um... didn't make it out of the portal."

"What??"

"And, um, also..." Metsa continued, "Soon after the portal closed, a beam of light lit up the sky. We think... we think he may be in some sort of trouble."

"Wait, wait, wait, wait... um, how long has it been since-?"

"Approximately three days, fourteen hours, and five minutes," Uni answered.

Everyone stared at him.

"How on earth do you know that?" Multi asked, incredulous.

"Counted it."

No-one responded to that.

Suddenly, the doors burst open and Positive came running through, gasping for breath.

"G-guys, guys," he panted, "I-I-"

"Where. The HELL. Have YOU been?!" Ragey demanded through clenched teeth, "Do you know how worried we've been??"

"S-sorry," Positive wheezed, "I-I won't do i-it again."

"C'mon, let the stick catch his breath, Ragey," Elemental chided.

Positive caught his breath, then straightened. "Um, so, I've been scouting."

"Where?" Second asked.

"At King's base."

"What?!" Ragey looked thunderstruck; it seemed like he hadn't cooled down from the scolding he'd given Positive. "Do you know how dangerous-"

"Come now," Elemental said, and there was an edge to his voice that made Ragey shut up instantly.

"Did you... find anything?" Purple asked.

"Unfortunately, yes."

"What was it?" Multi asked.

"Spartan, um... he may be in worse trouble than you guys think."

"What's wrong with him?" Cobalt asked, dreading the answer that came next.

"He... he seems to be corrupted."

"No way..."

"I also found King and another stick-"

"Both corrupted as well?" Purity guessed.

Positive nodded.

"Wait." Cobalt rummaged around in his pockets. "Might the stick've looked like this?" He showed a photo of a white-headed stick with a rainbow body.

"Hmm... possibly."

Cobalt put his face in his hands, distraught.

"We're not completely out of hope, though," Blue stated, "If Yellow could figure out what exactly is wrong with them, maybe we can save them, and who knows, maybe, after being saved, King will, y'know, finally see sense and join us!"

Some of the sticks nodded.

"That could work," Uni said, "But we'll have to manage to subdue them before finding out. How are we supposed to subdue three corrupted super-powerful sticks?"

"Well..." Second said slowly, "That remains to be seen."
