'You're going to be his main caretaker, make certain Kai doesn't want to run away. Use the carrot, not the stick.'

'Ugh.' Poltergeist groaned, 'Damn bastard. Like I have any idea what kids like. Maybe I'll get him one of those stuffed doll things..?'

He shadowed off to the store with about ¥10,000. Or about $75.

'Hm, this place is bright.' When was the last time he had seen such bright lights? He couldn't remember.

They walked around until he found a little plush thing. Like one of those fat little Squishmallows but with little arms. It had brown sewn-in eyes, a little mouth in the same brown, and pink cheeks. The body was mainly white and was made of some kinda very soft material.

'How the hell is this thing ¥5,000?' ($37 roughly) He sighed, 'Whatever, I have more than enough.'

'Hey, Kai?' Poltergeist knocked before sliding open the door. 'Are you in here?'

Kai gasped and brought his arm up as if to protect himself. 'H-Hey relax! I'm not here to hurt you. I have a gift.' Poltergeist tried. Taking a few steps and giving Kai the plush. 'It's a... Plush thing.' Damn, Kai already doesn't trust him. 'Damn I really don't know nothin' about kids.'

Kai looked at the pile of toys his last caretaker Hades got for him. A bunch of voodoo dolls, masks, monster figurines. He didn't like them. They creeped him out. He had to turn them all around, he felt like they were staring at him.

But this thing was kinda cute. Much nicer than the other toys he was given. It was soft and fluffy. 'Th-Thank you.'

Poltergeist's eye widened. The first words he's spoken since he got here... And it was thank you? Directed at him?

'You can talk?'

'Mhm.' He nodded.

'Why didn't you say anything before?'

'I was scared.'

Poltergeist hesitated, 'I see... You got scared because of the horrific toys Hades got you right?'

'And Father is mean.'

He nodded, his father was a cruel man. 'I get that.' He smiled kindly, gently stroking his cheek with his thumb. 'I get that okay? Look, Hades got demoted. Don't ask to what. I'll be your new caregiver so if there's anything you need just say my name and I'll come. Okay?'

Kai nodded, hugging the plush. Poltergeist sat in front of Kai. 'You gonna give it a name?'

Kai thought for a moment. 'Eri... I won't be able to take care of her when the time comes. So I'll take care of this thing.'

'That's...' Poltergeist hesitated, dear God, this kid is too nice for his own good. 'A nice name.'

'Thank you.'

'Of course Kai. Look, I'm going to get you a drink and something to eat, okay?' Poltergeist ruffled his hair. 'Huh, he's... The first to not mention my body temperature.' He stood up and left the room.

'Not bad kid.' He smirked.
