"We have arrived." Piers nudges your shoulder to wake you up from your slumber.
You drove for hours and after some time you drifted off into sleep.
You groan, blink your eyes and strech yourself. Your car door opens and Piers grabs your hands that is streched forward to pull you out of the car slightly.
You stumble a bit forward since your feet just feel asleep.
After you stabilized yourself, you walk to the trunk to grab your jacket with your father's keys in it.
You look at the door and look back to the keys in your hand. Your bubble pops as Piers cups your hand with his "You still don't have to do that."
You huff "It's now or never, Piers. I came this far. Now I also can do what my father wanted me to do."
Piers nods understandingly and squeezes your hand. He lets go but soon your hands are laced together again as you walk to the door.
Your hands are slightly shaking as you unlock the door with the first key. Once it is open, you step in hesitantly.
Inhaling this familiar scent you immediately feel a bit more relaxed.
'Go to my room..' it rings through your head.
You don't hesitate as you walk up the stairs. You stop abruptly, almost causing your boyfriend to walk right into you. There is a slightly open door. The door to your old room.
Gulping, you step near it and push it open slowly. You step in and take in your all too familiar surroundings. Your bed, desk, drawer, everything is just like you left it. Even a few clothes are discarded on the floor. You walk more into the room, to your drawer. There are standing a few photos of you and the rest of your family.
You decide to take one of them with you.
Shrugging off the small bag on his back, Piers sets it down and lets you put in the picture.
After that, you walk to your closet. You open it. Your old clothes. They so remind you of old times. Of times, that would never come back. Of times, you will never have again.
You sigh to stop the tears that threatening to roll down your face. You don't take any of this with you.
For once, you look at Piers. He just looks at you, trying to support you. And he does to some extend. Being here with you is the greatest thing he could do to support you. You still have to thank him and Chris, and probably the whole Alpha unit, for not letting you down.
You huff and turn away, facing the last thing you want to face. Your bed. You sit down on it. And for the first time you notice a little resistance.
"Huh ?" you frown slightly. Sliding off the bed, you kneel down beside it.
"What is it, (y/n) ?" Piers asks concerned.
You ignore him at first, concentrating on the resistance.
You push the matress up and look under it. There it is. A Nine-Oh-Nine, fully loaded with an extra clip. You gulp and grab it.
"I...I didn't know that was here !" You say as you show it to Piers fearfully. He takes it from you and observes it.
"Seems like an older version. Maybe your father's ?" Piers suggests.
"Maybe..." You trails off, crossing your arms slightly in frustration.
The sniper sighs a bit and puts it into the back, promising he will find out who it belongs to.
But now it is time to go to your dad's room.
You lead the way and almost crash into the door because it is locked. It has always been open. Since can think this damn thing wasn't locked your whole life.
You shake your head and stumble forward from Piers catching grip on your waist. Pulling out the keys you try another key. The clicking sound from the lock lets you assume it is finally unlocked.
You step in and search for the light switch since it is pitch black in there. You find it, but it doesn't work.
"Of course...!" You mutter in frustration.
You try to remember the way to the windows and step right into the dark. After a few moments of silence you pull up the roller blind and light floads the room.
'Find the door..' the words of your father ring through your head.
You go to the giant bookshelf and search for "The History Of Civilisation". You dad always recommended it as the most boring book of all time, so it was your first suggestion.
You see it, but you can't reach it. It is almost on top of the shelf.
"May I help you up ?" Piers asks from behind you. You sigh gladly and you climb on his shoulders as he kneels down in front of you.
Even with his help you are barely able to reach it.
"You have to stand on your toes, please." You request. Your boyfriend grunts and retorts "What's the high of this damn thing ?"
You can't help but giggle at his slightly irritated response. With your boyfriend staying on his toes you can finally grab the book.
You pull it out and step off the sniper. Thumbing through the sides you see a handwritten note.
You throw the book shut and walk to the drawing on the wall. It is a small landscape and you take it off the wall. On the wall there is nothing except for a bit dust. You look at the drawing and see a tiny switch.
You switch it in the other direction and the shelf shoves itself to the side.
Behind it, there are professional looking hunting and combat clothes along with a chest.
After you put all the clothes in the bag, you go for the chest. You grab the keys and go for the remaining key. It fits.
The chest springs open a bit and you have to push it open the rest of the way.
The thing it contains is something, you could imagine in yout dreams that your father would keep here.
"His rifle...." you breath and drop to your knees. Lunging inside, you pull the rifle out of the chest with upmost care.
"I think it is what he wanted me to find. It is his rifle. He always had it with him. Just that one day he hadn't..." You explain as you lean against Piers' shoulder.
The lieutenant straps the rifle around his back to give you a bit more space. You look into the chest again.
There is a note, adressed to your brother and you don't even think about opening it. There is also another pair of these wrist-knives, but these are bigger than yours.
You get everything in the trunk. After the door closed you look back one more time.
"It was nice...But I have a new life now..." you say and your eyes roam over the building one last time.
You jog up to Piers. He turns around and is surprised when you kiss him. He wraps his arms around you and holds you tight. You break away and whisper "Thank you for being here. Being with me."
"I promised, didn't I ? And besides, I would never let you do this alone." He smiles.
And with that you drive back home, for hours.
