"Venenum." Your codename. "I will pay you a total of 500 grand for you to complete this job for me. If needed I will raise it to 1 mil." Your breath catches in your throat at his words, but your composure remains.
On the desk between you, the man slides a file towards you. Opening the file, you flip through pages of information. There is very little for you to go off of, and the man is looking uneasy at your silence. He wears a dark hoodie, paired with a black baseball cap to hide his face.
"He is Alatus, another well known assassin in the underworld, just as you are. But he is most well known for stealing people's assassinations, or stealing their mission altogether. Needless to say he is infamous. I want him gone. He is messing with my job." The earlier uneasiness disappears, suddenly replaced by newly found confidence.
"Alright..." Though the information is slim, the price is grand. And what's being an assassin without getting the pay? That's what motivates you.
"I'll take this job." You adjust your mask, your outfit similar to his, a baseball cap paired with a black hoodie as well as a face mask. You'd prefer to remain a faceless assassin for as long as needed, there are people you need to keep safe.
"Thank you, Venenum. You know where to find me." Standing from the desk, he brushes past you and out of the meeting room.
A phone call breaks the silence of the room, and you reach into your hoodie jacket to accept it, not even checking the ID.
"Hello?" You question, silently scanning through the information on Alatus carefully, taking in every single detail, searching for a single lead on how to find him, and how to kill him.
"Hey love, when will you be home? I've almost finished preparing dinner." Your boyfriend's voice floods into your mind and you're immediately closing the file and exiting the meeting room, listening to the sound of him supposedly cooking on the other line.
"I was just on my way back, I'll see you soon babe." You mount onto your motorcycle, carefully tucking the file into your backpack that sat on your seat, slinging it onto your arm and grabbing your helmet.
"Okay, see you." You smile before hanging up the call and putting your phone away. Placing the helmet on your head, you rev the engine and speed down the street, ignoring the speed limit, only desperately wanting to spend the evening with your boyfriend.
Xiao may be a fucking horrible cook, but you'll gladly eat anything he cooks and compliment it just to see him smile at you. You just pray to the dear archons he didn't make almond tofu again.
──
Honestly, why did you get your hopes up?
Sitting on the coffee table in your shared apartment are two plates of almond tofu, and your boyfriend sitting with his legs crossed and a proud smile on his face.
"Babe.. can't we order takeout someday?" You set your bag down and join him at the table, staring at the plate of almond tofu with mere pity. Xiao can't make anything except almond tofu, so he ONLY makes almond tofu.
"But what if it's poisoned?"
"I- Xiao-" At a loss for words, you just sigh and eat the almond tofu, and he follows your actions. Soon, you finish the food and take your dirty plate, as well as his, to the small kitchen, washing them off and placing them in the sink.
You walk back to see Xiao nodding off to sleep, struggling to keep himself upright as his body starts to drift off into a deep slumber. Just as he fully falls asleep, you catch his body and pick him up. Xiao is not the tallest, at least to the point where you're able to carry him to your shared bedroom.
You pull the covers over him and push his hair back to kiss his forehead before turning the lights off and exiting the room.
Pulling the file from your bag, you enter your office and sit in front of your computer. Guess it's research time. Yay.
But as you pull up your browser and search, there's a gut feeling this is something you'll regret in the near future. And honestly, you should've listened to your gut. Your gut is always right.
