Maya's POV:
It was 5:00 Am when I got a call from my work. I went to sleep without Carina, as she was still at the hospital, on call. I picked up the phone and they were just telling me I had to come in to work in an hour and a half, as the other person had to leave their shift early. I texted Carina letting her know I won't be home when her shift ends. I got ready and showered and ate breakfast, and brushed my teeth. I  changed into my clothes and boots tying my hair up in a ponytail. I headed to work in my car and pulled into the lot to park. I walked in and just waited till we were needed. After half an hour someone called put department and said they have a severe fire. the team and I got suited fast and got in the fire truck and headed to where the fire was. When we arrived we could see just how bad it was. Oh god.. this feeling of dread was in the pit of my stomach. I didn't want to be here, but we had a job to do. With a sigh, we got to work. We had to check and make sure no one was inside. Thats when it happened. I don't know what it was, something heavy fell on me when I was walking in the house making sure no one was inside. I felt it hit me, I fell and everything went black. I trie'd fighting my body to keep my eyes open, it was to no use.

Carina's POV:
I was nearing the end of my shift when I got a page from Miranda Bailey telling me she has something important to tell me.  I walked to her and asked whats wrong. "You're gonna wanna sit down" I did and then she told me the worst news ever. "Uhm. Your wife, Maya, she was at a scene, with a bad fire and... she.. she was in an accident there. A wood plank fell on her when she was checking to see that everyone got out safely, and she went unconscious, someone from her team found her when she didn't return. The ambulance is on their way here. I don't know her condition." I was in so much shock I didn't know what to do. I just sat there.. Everything around me was a blur.

Cristina's POV:
I was talking to Meredith when I got a 911 page for someone coming in from a massive fire. I went running down to the floor they were on. I arrived and they gave me the rundown "33 yr old blonde, a burn on her right arm, and Left leg. Inhaled smoke, Don't know how severe." I nodded and took her to get her lungs checked for severity.

After testing we realized she'll need an emergency lung surgery. We won't be able to do it for a a couple tho seeing as we have to wait for a donor.

Carinas POV:
Cristina walked out of the room and updated me. Maya is stable as can be, but needs an emergency lung transplant. She can have visitors now.. until the surgery. Thats good news right? I took a deep breath. "Ok Carina you can do this" I thought to myself, now or never. I walked in Maya's room and she was on her bed sleeping. I grabbed her hand and cried. I just clutched her hand. I feel asleep for an hour. I woke up to a long beep on my right, and doctors running in. "SHES FLATLINING!" "GET CARINA OUT OF HERE!" I started sobbing as someone grabbed me. "NO LET ME GO. MAYA! PLEASE." After what felt like forever waiting in the lobby, They finally came out and said Mayas ok and I can return. I walked back in drying my tears. I sat in my chair, and tried calming down. After half an hr I managed to fall asleep.

I woke up two hours later, to Maya smiling. Then Cristina walked in saying its time to prep her for surgery. I kissed Maya's hand and wished her good luck.

(time skip after surgery)
Maya was rolled back in her room, they said it'd be a bit till she wakes up. A couple hours later, after a nap. She was awake and tried speaking. "Shh, love, don't try to speak. You had lung surgery."

(Another time skip after recovery)
After 7 days, she was able to leave. I gave her soft grey joggers to change into, and packed our stuff. We finally left, and I drove us home. After we arrived, I asked if she's hungry, and she nodded. I gave her a apple sauce , since she cant have proper food yet. She quietly thanked me and I nodded. After she ate we decided to go to a carnival. We got to go on a couple rides and watch fireworks. It was 8 pm when we finally left. We were both tired. After half an hour we arrived home. We brushed our teeth and got ready for bed. I kissed her, and we said goodnight.

It was 3 am, and thats when it happened. I woke up with a gasp, and looked to my right.  Maya was still laying on the hospital bed. It was all a dream. Cristina came in after a couple minutes, with a sad look on her face. "What is it" I asked. "Uhm Carina... Her condition is worse that we thought. If she doesn't have surgery soon, she wont make it." I just blinked with tears forming. I took a shuttering breath and nodded. I had to use the bathroom. I looked at Maya, shes still asleep. I went to the bathroom fast. I was gone for three minutes before I walked to her room. When I got back, Maya's machine was flatlining, and doctors were everywhere. Thats when they said what I never wanted to here. "Time of death?" Cristina asked. "3:25 A.M." Miranda said. "NOOO!" I screamed. "SHES NOT GONE! YOU HAVE TO TRY AGAIN! TRY HARDER! SHES STILL HERE!" They covered her with the blanket. "Im sorry, Carina, we tried everything" Miranda said. I fell to the floor sobbing. I couldn't believe Maya left.

(8 days later)

Today was the day.. Maya's burial. It was grey and cloudy. I haven't left the guest bed since Maya left me. It reminds me of Maya too much, to sleep in our room. It still smells like her. I knew I had to get ready. I wore a black dress and black heels. Crying, I got ready to go. I arrived at the Seaside Memorial, and walked to where everyone else was. I couldn't stop crying. The funeral went by in what felt like a blur to me. After an hour, everyone left, and what once was a drizzle, was now a downpour. It reflected how I felt. I got down and sat by her gravestone. Sobbing, I kissed it. "Maya, I know you're watching over me. You always were brave, putting others first. I love you, and I miss you." I couldn't stop the sob that left me, as I felt a breeze. Maya.
