Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton awoke with a start. Her heartbeat racing, as her eyes frantically gazed across the room, in a panic. Her palms clammy and cold. "Alexander?" she whispered out, her voice shaking.
"Betsey?" Alexander replied, who was at his desk. The candle was dripping wax onto his papers, but he either didn't seem to notice or didn't seem to care. Eliza bit her tongue, trying to calm down. She heard the soft noises of the rain hitting the roof, the sound of Alex's quill scratching the paper as he wrote. She could hear the faint sounds of their baby boy, Philip, sleeping peacefully. Suddenly, she relaxed. Alexander looked at her, clearly concerned and confused. "Is everything alright?" he asked.
She hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Yes. My apologies..." she said. "Just...dreamt of something terrible, is all."
Alexander frowned, standing up, walking over to her side, clearly not believing her. "My dear, I cannot help you if you won't tell me what's wrong. I want to help you," he knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. She looked into his eyes, lowering her tensed shoulders as she felt his hands. Felt him being there. That was enough to calm her down. She took a deep breath.
"I dreamt...I dreamt you were all gone. Babe Philip, you...my family...I had nothing," she whispered out. She watched as Alexander's gaze softened, giving her hands a light squeeze.
"My Betsey...look at me," he said, taking one of her hands, placing it on his chest, over his heart. "You feel my heartbeat, yes? I'm alive. You feel me, you hear me. I'm here. And I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon. As for the babe, look. He is deep in sleep, dreaming of whatever his little heart desires. You can hear him, yes? He's alive. Your family is alive. We're all here, my dear."
She smiled softly, leaning into her husband's touch as he stood, kissing her tears away. "Do not fret, my dear. Go back to sleep. I'll join you in a moment," he whispered softly, not wanting to wake Philip. She nodded, watching as he went back to his desk, finishing up whatever he was working on. Eliza laid back down into the position she was in, beginning to fall asleep. She felt the bed dip, meaning her husband had joined her. She felt his arms wrap around her, pulling her close into him. And she giggled softly, accepting his warm embrace.
The two fell asleep, snuggling in each other's warmth. Eliza was thrilled to have her husband by her side once more, after so long of not being able to cuddle with each other, due to him fighting in the war. She couldn't be more happy with her little family.
