Walking through the door I could hear people talking very quietly. Looks like they were oblivious to the fact that I just walked through the door. I tiptoed towards the entry way in the lounge room and crouched down behind a flower pot. Here I could hear what they were saying,

"I don't know what to do with her Sam, I don't even know her! To me she is just a stranger, if it weren't for the fact that I would lose money I would send her off to a boarding school. She'd be gone already," my mom said ranting as she talked to her boyfriend.

"Love, I know how you feel. It's awkward I know. Today I went downstairs to grab some breakfast and I noticed that some of the food was gone. That was my food, she didn't even ask! I don't think her father or her grandmother taught her manners. Hey, I thought you said to her that she has to provide for herself. She just broke one of your rules," Sam said whining in annoyance.

"Babe, I said she can provide for herself once she finds a job. That food in the fridge isn't just yours, it's for us and our kids. Stop being a fat pig," she replied to Sam clearly irritated to the fact he was always claiming ownership over just about everything.

"I am not a fat pig! Excuse me, who buys the food for the family huh? Who pays the bills? Who gets everything you want because you rarely have money to afford it? Me that's who, so stop starting stuff that's irrelevant," Sam said with his voice rising in anger.

"Fine, your right. I'm sorry babe. I love you, please forgive me," mom said trying to calm Sam down.

"Good, so what are we going to do about Ebony? You said as soon as she finds a job she has to start providing for herself. Well if that's the case maybe we can push her in the right direction. Find her a job, you know that stuff," Sam suggested.

"That sounds like a good idea. Yeah, I think I know a few good jobs she can apply for. I don't know about the pay, but you have to start someone where right?" mom said to Sam.

"Ok, alright you can sort that out. I'm just going to go to my mate's house for a beer. Shouldn't be too long," Sam said while standing up and giving my mom a kiss on the cheek.

I quietly run up the stairs careful to make sure that they don't find out that I was ears-dropping on them. As soon as I get to my room I walk to my bed and sit down.  I think back to what mom said. She thinks I'm some stranger; the only thing that was stopping me from going to boarding school was because she would lose money. I would've been gone already otherwise.  Well that's a big kick in the face.

For a while I just sit there and rethink what they just said. Would I be that much of a burden to them? They hate me that much to say those nasty things about me? Now that I know their "true colours" I may not even live here very long.

Once I turn seventeen and finish high school I will be going back to Minnesota to be closer to Nan.
