I was in either middle school or elementary school when I first wrote this, I can't remember. But, I wanted to flesh it out and make a story with it. This is the original that I had written down for an assignment. -Rem
"Okay children, off to bed now, get some rest." Father said. We all got up, kissed our parents goodnight and headed off to our bedrooms.
I looked outside my bedroom window, a storm was forming in the distance. The waves were beginning to crash forcefully. My brother appeared in the doorway, "Will you tell us a story?" I nodded and followed him back to his room where my little sister was sitting on the bed. I brought over a chair and sat in front of the bed.
"Okay, It began a long long time ago, before humans were alive. Deep in the ocean a group of sea creatures were gathered and sleeping on the ocean floor. These creatures had long, scaley, colorful, and delicate tails. They had the top half of humans, they are known today as mermaids and mermen."
The thunder crashed outside and my sister jumped under the covers in fear. I walked over and pulled the covers off of her, I reassured her that everything was fine and she shouldn't be scared. "These creatures were unknown to any land walker, they hid in the dark parts of the ocean. As millenniums went by and things on land changed, the ocean stayed the same. Fishermen on land began catching glimpses of these creatures, as many began to break the rules of staying hidden. Fishermen would go home and tell what they saw to their families, their daughters made up stories and told their friends. Soon the stories became more popular and toys, clothes, and many other things were made after the mermaids and mermen. One day a young girl sat on a rock with an ocean view. She pulled out her sketchbook and started sketching the world around her. She heard a small sound coming from the water, she looked down and saw-"
My sister interrupted by screaming, "A MERMAID!" I told her to quiet down or our parents will hear and continue the story. "She looked down and saw what everyone had been talking about around town. She blinked and rubbed her eyes, the creature smiled at her. "You're a...you're a..a-" the girl said. "A merman, I heard there are rumors about my kind up here." The girl stood astonished at the speaking merman. "My little sister kept talking about your species but I never thought it would be true." The girl closed her sketchbook and leaned closer to the creature. The merman had deep seaweed green eyes, long tangled sandy blonde hair, and a muscular body with tattoo-like marks along his arms. He pushed the girl away lightly since he was feeling disturbed by the way she was looking at him. "I need your help and maybe a few others. My kingdom is under attack from a neighboring kingdom. We tried negotiating with them but they waved us away. My father has been freaking out these days." The girl looked at him and asked, "Are you a prince?" The merman nodded. The girl's phone rang and she saw that her mother was calling her, she checked the time and noticed she needed to be home. "I have to go home, but I never caught your name. I'm Sophia" she said to the merman. "My name...is Wyatt," he grinned. "Nice to meet you, Wyatt, could we maybe meet here after I get off of school tomorrow?" He nodded and Sophia ran off. Every day after school she would meet him after school and discuss the war with the other kingdom. They discussed battle strategies until the sun hit the horizon. Then the day finally came. Sophia walked to the rock like she had been doing for the past few weeks and she didn't see Wyatt there. There was a note though, it was a wet piece of paper and a small jar with two small droplets that reminded her of contacts. The paper said "Place the two droplets on the side of your nose and come find me, hurry. -W" Sophia did as the paper said and she took off her jacket, shoes, and socks leaving her with only a tank top and leggings to swim in.
She jumped and to her surprise, she could breathe and see things clearly. A small light was shining from the bed of the ocean. She swam closer to it and as she was swimming she heard screams and battle cries. She kept swimming and finally got to the point where she could see details. The bed in front of the magnificent castle was covered with bodies of mermen and mermaids, either dead or unconscious. She kept swimming until she ran into Wyatt who was wounded sitting up against a wall. He looked at her and said struggling "It's too late, they got us. It was nice to know you Sophia'' He went limp."
My little brother was already fast asleep but my sister was eager to hear more. "That's it for tonight Olivia, now get some rest." She pouted but walked back to her room and went to bed. My parents were asleep when I went down to get a glass of water. It was four a.m., I kept her up really for a really long time. I heard a melodic whistle from outside, one I haven't heard in years, not since I was in school. I ignore it and watch some TV until the sunrise. I put on a light jacket and take a small walk outside to the edge of the ocean. I sat on a large boulder and looked down at the water, the waves looked the same as they did my Sophomore year, the faint texture of a scaly tale flowing in the water. I looked down into the water and smiled. "Did ya miss me?" A man said with a playful voice, he was making faces in the water. "You're a dork Wyatt''
