"Here we are" I say after parking the car. "That's my parents' house over there, the one with all the flowers."
"Uhm."
"Dec, are you ok? What is it?"
"I need to get out of the car."
"Wait, what?" I say, struggling with my seatbelt. "What is going on?"
When I finally manage to get out of the car, Declan is pacing up and down the sidewalk, taking deep breaths.
"Dec, what is it? Tell me."
"I think I'm having a panick attack."
"Oh" I say, trying to remember what you should do when this happens. "Let's focus on breathing, ok? In through your nose, out through your mouth."
"I'm already doing that."
"Then follow what I say. Inhale one, two, three. Exhale three, two, one."
That seems to make him feel a bit better after a while, though he still is struggling.
"You are doing great, Dec. Inhale one, two, three. Exhale three, two, one."
"Let's walk."
"Walking, yes. We can go to my old school, it's close by. This way."
"Tell me more about it."
"About my school?"
"Yes" he says, still focused on his breathing.
"Well, it's and old building they built after demolishing a factory, and we used to say that the ghost of the old owner was still there."
"A ghost?"
"Yep. And he wasn't the only one. There also was the ghost of the old librarian."
"You were weird kids."
"Maybe" I say, still keeping an eye on him. His hands aren't on fists anymore, so I guess all this rambling is working.
"What happened to the librarian? How did he die?"
"Some used to say that a bookshelf fell on him after some kids pulled a prank on him. Others that he just fell down the stairs. And others that it was a heart attack after reading a cursed book."
"Wow."
"I remember being scared of going to the library, because they said that the cursed book shows up out nowhere, and if you find it, you are dead."
"How did you end up being so normal after growing up with those stories?"
"I don't know" I shrug. "And that's my school."
"It doesn't look that old."
"Because they repainted it a few years ago. But it used to be grey. And the windows were different, they made weird noises when you opened them."
"Again, how didn't they ruin your childhood?" he says with a little chuckle.
"Are you feeling better?" I ask, not knowing if it's the right thing to ask.
"I do. I now may have nightmares, but..."
"I can call my parents and tell them we'll meet them another day. It doesn't have to be today."
"Won't they get mad?"
"Nah, they won't mind waiting a bit longer, don't worry."
"Are you sure?" he asks, his breathing starting to sound a bit shaky again.
"I'm sure. I'll tell them that you had a las minute work thing and couldn't make it. Is that ok?"
"Yeah, yeah."
"Why don't you wait here while I go get the car? I promise the ghosts won't come after you, they only attack kids who went to this school."
"Ok" he says, smiling for the first time.
"And do you see that swing over there?"
"I do."
"That's where I got my first kiss. If you stay, you may get one too."
"That bad it was, that you want to forget it with one of mine?"
"Maybe..." I say with a smirk. "Will you be ok, then?"
"I will, yes. Thank you."
"Anything for you, Dec."
