you had been assigned to a case that shouldn't have taken too long to investigate. it appeared to be a textbook crime, yet you had found yourself falling deeper into a rabbit hole of mystery and tragedy. that single case was only part of a bigger scheme, and you were the unfortunate victim to get caught up in the criminal activity.

it was only supposed to be a lead you could take on your own, but your informant had betrayed you. and perhaps you should have known better to push further when you first saw the signs, but you had been desperate to find answers. that had proven to be a fatal mistake when you find yourself slumped against a wall. you had managed to stumble your way from the scene, though you hadn't gone unscathed. without any backup, your chances weren't looking too well.

but this case meant too much. with shaky hands, you fumble with your phone. you and [ l/i ] weren't exactly on the best terms in your relationship, but someone had to know about what had happened and your fingers had already moved on their own before you could reconsider dialing their number. they do answer, thankfully, and you urgently lead them through the information you'd like to have them record. they're confused as to why you'd ask them to report on the case when they were assigned to another one, but their worst fears are confirmed when you admit you don't think you'll make it. you're delirious from the pain and blood loss at that point. your mouth is running on its own, confessing to regrets and fears that you had kept to yourself as tensions between you and your lover had grown lately.

there's frantic shuffling from the other side of the call, but you've already started to blink slowly, eyelids feeling heavy. you don't realize it in the moment, but they're coming for you.
