Content Warning: Descriptions of Injury, CursingThe clock neared 4 pm, which signals your off time as the school nurse's assistant. But that doesn't mean that you are free though, as you still have homework to do in the clinic.
Since you sit in the clinic most of the time to assist the school nurse, you mostly spend the time learning at the clinic counter instead. The lectures are handed to you through video conferencing and you get longer, but easier schoolwork to do. It only happens around 4 periods a day, so you don't miss out too much in class.
Even so, being the nurse's assistant is a dream for every student in Y High School despite the heavy work. They only know the sweet bits though, as being the assistant is hell during sports breaks and school festivals when injury and food poisoning breakouts go rampant.
Not to mention another pain in the butt regarding being the nurse's assistant: Kim Seungmin.
Seungmin is one of the delinquents in Y High. Both of you are second-years but in different sections. Even so, he still brings danger to you even when you're both a floor apart.
He's part of a gang of misfits led by Bang Chan, a third-year student. Followed by Han Jisung, the rowdiest of the group, and Yang Jeongin, the loudest first-year student you'll ever meet.
They all go into trouble in one way or another, but it's always Seungmin who keeps going to your clinic, looking like a beat-up puppy (and somehow he always comes in when the school nurse is out). Then when you treat his wounds, he always talks about how he got it at that time, even though you never ask. He keeps babbling but you never try to shut him up, because you're already too tired to argue anyways. It's the worst part of being the assistant.
And speaking of the devil, the boy appears from the doorway, followed by Jisung. The younger looks at you expectantly, as if he was waiting for something without directly asking for it. As for the other, he goes directly to the storage area to find himself some gauze and bandages and leaves.
Your expression was blank until Seungmin tried to catch your attention again. "Ahem." He waves to you. You put down your pen with an annoyed expression.
"Alright, get on the bench." You instruct him to go up the cushioned bench. This time, he has bruises on his arm and face, and small scratches that littered his legs. You wonder how he gets into more fights and to worse degrees than the last, but you didn't put more thought into it.
After you picked up some iodine for the scratches, Seungmin began to talk. "I got into another rumble with the boys from X High. They were pretty tough, but it's not yet settled 'cause the teachers almost saw us and we had to leave. That's how I got these scars."
You pick up a cotton ball and pour some iodine over it. You bend over to swab over the scratches, which made him wince a little through the pain. He tries to act cool and remain calm, but he puffs out some air now and then to express his pain.
"Ya, that hurt. Isn't it supposed to not hurt when you're treating a wound?"
"What? Who told you that?" "I dunno."
"You're a brick head, don't you know that?" You accidentally slip out. Shit. You didn't want to get on his bad side, but to your surprise, Seungmin laughs instead.
"You're so funny, y/n." He almost says your name as some sort of endearment, which you find a little gross to your stomach. You had an inkling that he may have an interest in you, which could be the reason why he always wants to get treated by you. But even so, you still dislike him because of his rowdy attitude. Although that is the case, Seungmin persists you in warming up to him by talking to you or playfully flirting with you-to which you turn a cold shoulder in reply.
After covering up the scratches with some gauze and tape, you proceed to pick up a cold compress for the bruises. But you then realize that Jisung took the last one and it was unlikely that he wouldn't return it until a week later, so you settled on getting a bunch of ice and putting them in a plastic bag. But as you rummage through the cart, you fail to see any sort of plastic bag to put ice in. So you went in for the expensive route: buying a cold drink to act as a cold compress for the bruise.
Seungmin looks at you puzzled as you take the exit to the nearest vending machine. You approach the vending machine to buy your usual peach soda.
You return and Seungmin eyed at the can you purchased, confused. You hand the soda to him. "I couldn't find any cold compress, so take this one instead," you said. He beamed up instantly, taking it with both hands. "Just say that you want to give me a drink, y/n. It's easier." He smirked, then put the drink down, not putting it near his bruise.
"You're supposed to put that on your bruise, idiot." You took his hand that held the cold soda and placed it on his cheek. He smiles again, flashing his braces.
You both stay like that for a while, since you were sure that he's going to put the can down if you let go. "How'd you know that my favorite's peach soda?"
"I had no idea. This is just what I usually buy." Your tone was as cold as the drink. "Whaaat, no way! We have the same favorites. Tell me more." His puppy eyes were on yours but you were unfazed.
"And why would I want to do that for someone like you?"
"Because I wanna get to know you better, duh!" You suddenly became more aware of your fingers touching his, and the way that his cheeks are glowing into a pinkish hue. You let go of his hand and looked away. Annoying.
