I ran as hard I as I could, making my shoes slip off and leaving them behind in the moistened earth. The screams were getting closer by the minute now. He was sprinting ahead of me not noticing that I was slipping up. He glanced over his shoulder, a look that would be burned on the insides of my eyelids forever, and yelled. But I couldn’t separate the words. I felt the mud disappear from under my feet, reappearing under my thighs, stomach and face. A net had been thrown and had caught its prey. I screamed at him to run, to keep safe, to live… I told him I loved him.
