"Stacey!"
Melanie turned towards Dustin Henderson as he cleared his throat. He had been trying to get the attention of Stacey Albright, one of Mel's best friend, but she had been ignoring her. Mel had been giving him sympathetic glances as he kept attempting to talk to her. Finally, Stacey answered.
"Yeah?"
She didn't look pleased to see him.
Dustin stuck out his hand.
"Shall we?"
He raised his eyebrows up and down.
"Um, no thanks."
She scoffed at him.
Mel just stood there, uncertain what to do, but Dustin walked away to go ask other girls before she had the chance to say something. She followed Stacey then grabbed her shoulders to turn her around.
"What?"
"Why'd you have to be so mean to him? He seemed sweet."
"Because he's a dork! Why do you care anyway? Did you want to dance with him or something?"
"No!"
Mel answered quickly. Honestly, she didn't hate the idea of dancing with Dustin, but she knew if she said so her friends would make fun of her because they thought that popular cheerleaders like her weren't supposed to talk to dorky boys.
"Good. Then don't worry about it. Let's just go back to talking about what we were before we got rudely interrupted by Toothless."

Mel couldn't focus while Stacey was talking. She was too distracted by the fact that Dustin was sitting all alone, crying. She didn't understand why no one wanted to talk to him. It wasn't like he was ugly or mean. He seemed quite sweet and was honestly kind of cute. Was she the only one who would be willing to dance with him? If she was, then she'd have to go over there and ask him. She didn't want to leave him sitting there and crying all night.
Before she could make her move, Nancy Wheeler beat her to it. Dustin and Nancy walked out onto the dance floor. They both slowly got into the rhythm and looked happy together. She felt a ping of jealousy. She wished she could be dancing with Dustin, but Mel didn't want to go out and ruin their happiness by asking to dance with him. It was probably too late to ask anyways.

└──────────────────────────────────┘As the next song came on, Mel felt her body moving to wear Nancy and Dustin were dancing. She didn't understand why because she just explained why she couldn't go over to them, but she was honestly quite happy about it. She used all of her willpower to speak once she reached them.
You can do this! It's what you've been wanting the whole night!
She cleared her throat and they both turned to look at her. She stuck out her hand like Dustin had done earlier.
"May I have this dance, m'lord?"
They both looked surprised at the question, and Dustin didn't answer her.
"Come on, don't you wanna dance with a cheerleader? I promise I don't bite."
Nancy spoke first.
"I'll see you later, Dustin."
She left with a smile.
Dustin realized he was staring at Mel so he cleared his throat and looked down.
"So.. are you gonna just stand there, or are you going to dance? I mean- you don't have to if you don't want to but.."
"Of course I'll dance with you m'lady, I just gotta warn you that I'm not the best at dancing."
"Don't worry, I'm not very good at it either. My name's Melanie by the way, but my friends call me Mel."
"My name's Dustin."
He looked up and smiled shyly. Mel smiled back and held his shoulders as he grabbed her waist. They began to slow dance, moving to the music. While they danced, they looked into each other's eyes and whispered to each other. They both looked content.
