Chapter 3

Charity's POV (Cindy's mother)

Looking at Cindy while eating all the pizza I heard something outside. Knowing camp, they wouldn't take her without telling me so it couldn't be them. So it probably is something or someone else. Who could it be?

After a few minutes of waiting for Cindy to eat the pizza, I sent her up to her room. Then when I heard her room shut, I shouted "I know you're there!" Then I saw a figure move behind the trees. I saw a sight I thought I would never see again.

"Hello there, Charity" said the creature.

"Hello, doctor. I see you haven't changed after the past few years. Still the same harsh breath. Still the same look in your face and the same cold, horrid eyes"

"Charity, you flatter me" then he glanced down to the bracelet around my left wrist. "I see you still have that bracelet your friend gave you". I took the metal knife from the counter and said "Professor, leave before I slice your throat"

Laughing, the professor said "Ah Charity, you also haven't changed since we've met. Tell me, is your friend Jude still alive? I recall that she would have died in less than half a minute after what I did to her"

I felt the adrenaline go through my veins. "You have no right to talk about Jude!" Then I lunged. I was able to scratch his arm but that did little to damage him. I stepped back and attacked again but I knew it was too late. He was changing to his true form, a chimera. If you ever get hit by it's tail, death is inevitable, but it's tail is only one of it's parts to be feared. Its claws and teeth are like knives. I dodged an attack from his tail and tried stabbing his head but he dodged it. I stepped back to dodge another attack from his claws and put my hand on the counter to steady myself. I felt a knife and grabbed hold of it. It was amazing how Cindy was able to sleep after all the noise we are making. His tail kept making stuff fall all over the place.

After a few minutes of slicing and dodging and throwing utensils I was able to slice one part of his scorpion tail. Although he didn't disintegrate, it was still an advantage. Now all he has is four claws and his teeth to dodge from. I was about to stab him while he was recovering when the other part of his tail swept me off my feet. I tried dodging his claws when I didn't notice his other claw was behind me.

Pain shot through my back, the kind of pain that I have never felt before, and I have felt a lot of pain before especially giving birth to Cindy. I screamed. I have never screamed this much since Jude died. I felt the monster was pushing his claw deeper into my back. He whispered in my ear "Well Charity, you failed again. First you couldn't save your friend Jude, then you couldn't save the camp in California, then you weren't able to save the ancient library in Greece, and now, Charity, you couldn't save your own life from me. How sad"

Then I saw Cindy, hiding behind the counter. My life flashing before me. All my failures, all my success, and all my pain. Today, after all I have done, I shall save my daughter from this monstrosity.

I mouthed the word run and I saw her run. With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I got the knife and swung it at him. It hit him in the gut but all he did was shake it of. He whispered too me "I pity you Charity. After everything, you couldn't save your daughter. I will let you bleed 'til you die" and he ran after Cindy.

With my life flashing to me I said, with the last of my breath "Cindy, I love you" and I glanced at the bracelet from Jude and I said "I am sorry Jude" Whatever happens to my daughter, I also want to say "I'm sorry" I whispered. I'm sorry if something happens to you. I'm sorry that I couldn't save you right now. I'm so sorry, Cindy. And with that, I slowly closed my eyes and had my last breath.
