Chapter 3

I don't know how long I've been here now. Every day is the same, a kid is sold, a kid is beaten, and a kid dies. I watch every day as the strings here weaken, no longer is the orphanage filled with bright strong strings.

The nuns here preach of God as they beat us, but all I see are devils playing dress-up. A couple of times kids try to fight back, but they get punished. Every time it is a different punishment, but each punishment is gruesome. One time a young girl who had disobeyed orders had to sleep outside in the cold, she died of pneumonia. Her dead body was put on display as a warning to the other children that they better behave.

Between the fear of being beaten or sold, no one ever feels safe. The bad men range from gangsters, thugs, and even villains. I have no idea what they use the kids for, except that the kids are never heard from again, and sometimes even the bad guys come back for more kids.

Throughout everything, Tomura and I have stuck together. No matter how bad things get we are always there for each other, the only comfort in this hell hole. Another comfort is that no matter how terrible things have gotten Tomura's string has never faltered.

Every time I see a string weakening I know that person is about to die. The first time I noticed this was when one of the kids caught something and grew ill. Before they even got sick their string started fading, as if sensing their death was coming. Ever since then I've always been paranoid that one day, just like the others, Tomura's string will one day fade away. A gentle tug on my sleeve brought me back to reality.

"(y/n) it's time to hide, Sister Becky is angry," Tomura's hand, except for his pinky, grabbed mine.

Ah, Sister Becky is especially cruel. Out of all of the Sisters, she seems to enjoy inflicting pain the most. One time I made the mistake of not hiding in time, she hung me from a coat hook and locked me in a closet. The worst thing about it was that she would stand outside the door to listen to me cry.

"Ah, right."

Quickly we ran to the nearest small space. We squeezed together under a couch in the 'living' room.  Tomura put his hand on my trembling arm to calm me down. As always he lifted his pinky finger to avoid hurting me.

"It's okay (y/n) I won't let them harm you again. I'll kill them before that happens," gently I placed my hand on his hand, careful of his pinky.

"Thank you Tomura, you are a good person," I noticed another red string entering my eyesight.

"Shh, she's coming."

Not long afterward footsteps could be heard entering the room. From our position, we could see the robe of Sister Becky dragging on the floor. She stood in the middle of the room looking for any signs of kids. After a moment she left the room. I quietly let out a sigh of relief, we were safe for now. Just as the thought came to mind, the couch was flipped over.

"I found you little shits," Tomura quickly stood in front of me to protect me.

"Aw, that's kinda sweet, seeing the freak trying to protect the demon child. But no matter you both will be punished for hiding."

Before we could react Sister Becky grabbed both of Tomura's wrists in each hand and held them out of reach. In that position, Tomura couldn't fight back.

"Let him go!" Tomura struggled in her grasp.

"What'cha gonna do about it kid? Are you gonna stare me down like you do the others? Haha, your pathetic," a smug grin was on her face as she said those words.

When Tomura told me to not trust others I took that to heart. No one here knows the full detail of my quirk except for Tomura.

"If you don't let him go I'll hurt you, and I mean it," her string was right in front of me, all I would have to do was reach out my hand and yank it.

"Hurt me and the other Sisters will punish you like the one girl that slept outside during the winter," she kicked the back of Tomura's knees, forcing him on his knees in front of her. Never once letting her grip loose on his wrist.

"Stop it! I mean it, I'll hurt you!" I slowly take off the gloves on my hands.

"Prove it."

So I did. As I touched her string and yanked I saw all of her memories. From her abusive childhood to her slowly becoming a monster herself. When I snapped back to reality I heard the thump of her body hitting the floor.

'This is the first time I've ended a life on purpose.'

I rushed to Tomura's side.

"Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" I gently touched his hands, he had bruises starting to form on his wrist.

"I'm fine (y/n). We need to hurry before the other Sisters come and find Sister Becky," Tomura grabbed my hand and he looked me in the eyes.

"We have to run away. We could start a new life out there, imagine, no more beatings, warm food, and a comfy bed to sleep on. We could be happy (y/n), me and you."

Before I could reply a scream ripped through the orphanage, and so did an explosion.

"Villains are here!"

And just like that, my vision was filled with hundreds of strings.
