"You're making me late."

Kat stopped in her tracks and watched as her dad slowly lower the news paper he was looking at.

She noticed the permanent frown on his face that's been there since her mom decided to leave him for another man twice his age.

"I- you don't have to be at work for another 30 minutes." Kat spoke up softly, scared to even use her normal tone as times her dad thinks it's Kat raising her voice; which gets her into trouble.

"Are you telling me when I have to work?" Ronny raised a brow, his full attention now placed on his daughter.

Kat bit down on her lip and placed her arms behind her back. "No sir."

"That's what I thought." Ronny scooted the chair from underneath the table which made a terrible noise; almost as bad as nails running along a chalk board.

"Now go wait in the car." Ronny stood from his chair and his eyes followed the young girl hurrying out of the door and into the man's cop car.

Ronny had always dreamed of being the sheriff of the town he grew up in, but his job was offered to someone else. . .

Tom Beasley.

Once Ronny pulled his car in front of the school Kat hurried to jump out, but Ronny grabbed the girls bicep tightly.

"Be outside at four."

"I have choir." Kat glanced over at her dad, but never fully made eye contact.

"Look at me when I'm talking to you girl." Ronny pulled his daughters chin and made her look at him. Kat flinched and squeezed her eyes shut.

"You're not doing choir anymore." Ronny told his daughter who now had her eyes staring daggers into her fathers brown eyes.

"Now get out before you're late." Ronny shoved his daughter into the passenger side door.

Kat looked at him like he was crazy, but didn't take any longer to hurry out of the car and into the school.

She needed to see Mouse. She was the one and only person that made her feel safe.

When Kat walked into the school doors her eyes brightened when she saw her best friend staring at the bulletin board that had tons of flyers.

Kat practically ran over and hugged Mouse from behind which made the girl giggle.

Mouse turn and smiled when she saw Kat. "You look upset." Mouse pointed out which caused her smile to falter.

"I swear my dad is-"

"Aww if it isn't Tom and Jerry."

Kat and Mouse inwardly groaned when they heard the familiar voice. Both girls turned towards the blonde and as they turned the grabbed each other's hand and held it behind them.

"Very original." Kat gave the blonde a tight lipped smile.

"I'm surprised you're friends with a rodent." Karen pointed out. "You know- since cats like to hunt them."

Mouse rolled her eyes when the word rodent left her lips. Karen started calling her that when Mouse told her the name she went by. So much for trying to make friends.

"Ha. Ha. Ha. Karen you are literally so funny, I can't believe people call you blan who's whole personality is being- what was it again Mouse?" Kat turned her head to look at her friend.

Mouse looked at Kat. "I think it was bitch." Mouse finished as both girls turned their head back to the blonde with smirks.

Karen rolled her eyes. "Lesbians." Karen muttered as she turned around and started walking off.

"Karen you forgot something!" Mouse called out which made the blonde turn around with an annoyed look.

"What?" Karen crossed her arms waiting for Mouse to say something, but all Karen got in return was Mouse flipping her off with a smile.

Kat laughed at her best friends antics before grabbing her hand and pulling her off towards their favorite spot in the school.

As Kat was dragging Mouse through the hallway she ran into a hard body, causing the girl to stumble back slightly.

Mouse took a few steps back when she realized who her friend ran into.

"If it isn't Kat and her little sidekick." The boy chuckled as he looked down on the 5'1 girl and her friend that was a few inches away.

Kat didn't even know what to say to that. The one thing that scared her more than her dad was interacting with boys her age.

"Come on." Mouse grabbed her friends hand and dragged her two rooms down in the computer lab.

As Mouse was pulling Kat's dead weight along, Kat couldn't help but look back to see Tyler watching her with eyes that seemed intrigued.

Once both girls made it into the computer lab, Mouse shut the door and looked at Kat like she grew two heads.

"What was that?!" Mouse's eyes went wide, waiting for her friend to explain.

Kat's head fell back before lifting it back up showing a pout on her face. "You know boys make me nervous."

"I know, but I've never seen it in person." Mouse answered. "Now let's play before our class starts." Mouse sat down at her computer and began logging on.

Before Kat went to take her seat next to Mouse she felt a vibration from her phone, so she pulled it out of her pocket and furrowed her brows at the message.

Unknown
What would daddy say about boys?

Kat instantly blocked the number and rushed over to the computer next to Mouse. The message that started it all. . .
