Troy opened his eyes, breathing heavily, the echoes of last night’s nightmare still fresh in his mind—the monstrous figure, the little girl, the cries of a child. The clock read 8 a.m., and just as he started to shake off the memory, his mother Sara walked into the room, her voice urging him out of bed.
“Troy, get up! You’re going to be late for your first day,” she said with a smile.
Groggy, he sat up and glanced at his clothes, wondering what to wear.
Downstairs, his father, Matt, was on the phone, covering his face with one hand, clearly upset. As he hung up, he sat down and sighed.
“What’s wrong, Matt?” Sara asked, her voice filled with concern.
“Dr. Connors… he passed away last night,” Matt replied, his voice tight with emotion. Sara walked over, embracing him.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. What happened?” she asked, but Matt fell silent. Just then, Troy appeared, ready to head out, his mood already sour.
“You’re not taking the skateboard,” Matt said, his tone firm. “I’ll drive you.”
Troy’s jaw clenched, but he held back his frustration. “Come on, Dad. It’s just a skateboard.”
“No debate. I’m driving,” Matt replied, grabbing his keys.
At School
Mr. Brody parked the car outside the school, where clusters of students filled the grounds. Troy scanned the scene, feeling irritable at the thought of starting over yet again. He noticed a girl with dark hair and a book tucked under her arm, catching his interest.
“Please behave,” his father reminded him as he left the car.
“Yeah, sure,” Troy muttered, already distracted. Without a goodbye, he walked away.
As he entered the bustling school hallways, heads turned. Troy had kept the carefree vibe of California, and his presence stood out. Needing a break, he ducked into the restroom—and immediately regretted it, catching sight of a couple in the middle of a kiss.
“Steve, stop,” the girl, Nancy, whispered, pulling back, her cheeks flushed.
“Oh… awkward,” Troy muttered, quickly turning to leave.
“Jerk,” Steve grumbled after him, while Nancy hurried out, embarrassed.
Troy made his way to the office, introducing himself to the secretary, “Hi, I’m Troy Brody, the new kid.”
“Welcome, we’ve been expecting you,” she said, handing him a schedule. “By the way, you have practice this afternoon, along with Wednesday and Friday,” she added, then glanced down the hall.
“Nancy!” she called out, making the girl freeze in her tracks. “Come here, please.”
Nancy hesitated, her cheeks reddening slightly when she recognized Troy from the bathroom incident.
“Brody, this is Nancy Wheeler. Nancy, would you mind showing him around during lunch?”
“Uh, sure,” Nancy replied, trying to smile.
“Thanks, Nancy,” Troy said, attempting to act casual.
She looked at him, a small smirk tugging at her lips. “Meet me here in two hours. I’ll show you around.”
“Great. See you then, Wheeler,” he replied, watching her walk away, and then turned toward his first class.
Science Class
Troy knocked on the door to his science class, feeling a bit of stage fright as whispers started in the classroom.
“Come in,” the teacher called.
