"Grandma, I'm ready to go."
The small cottage was silent. Standing at the end of the door was a boy with black hair, no more than twelve years old. Golden eyes blinked rapidly in thought while his left hand clutched the strap of a backpack that was slung over his shoulder. In front of him was his grandmother; an old, yet strong-looking woman with snow white hair and a small frown on her face.
"It seems you are."
The room went silent yet again. It was a tense silence, one that was hard to break and filled with the sadness of a young boy leaving home for the first time. The grandmother stepped close to her grandson and gently placed a hand on his head. "Make sure to win that license for me Aeron, you hear?" She said. The boy - Aeron - gave a small smile.
"...I promise. Once I get my license, I'll come back."
He hugged his grandmother tightly, afraid that if he let go, he would never see her again. She chuckled softly while ruffling his hair and returning the hug. "I'll hold you to that promise." Aeron released his grandmother when her hand left his head and his own hand gripped the door handle, opening it to reveal a bright sunny day that would lead him to the outside world.
"I love you grandma."
"I love you too, Aeron."
The boy bolted down the path and dodged small clusters of people as he did, laughing all the while. His grandmother simply smiled and watched him go. "Come back safe." She held her hand to her chest. "Please... Come back safe."

Aeron was practically skipping down the road as he headed towards the docks. Billions of thoughts rushed through his head all at once, ideas and guesses as to what the Hunter's Exam was like. Would it be incredibly dangerous? Will there be thousands of competitors competing for a Hunter's License? He couldn't explain the feeling of excitement that clouded his thoughts.
"All aboard that's coming aboard!"
The golden-eyed boy snapped out of his thoughts. As he had been thinking, he had already arrived at the docks and currently stood in front of the ship that would take him closest to the exam site. "Man... I don't think I can bear waiting any longer!" He laughed to himself and leaped up onto the ship and passed the astonished crew member that was waving everyone aboard.
"I can't wait to take the exam! This is awesome!"
He froze. The various glares from multiple adults and stiff-armed men caused him to shrink back slightly from surprise and mild fear. However, despite all the glares, only two people didn't give him a second glance; a blonde-haired male that looked to be a few years older than himself, and a middle-aged man who had a briefcase lying next to him. Aeron swallowed nervously.
"Hello!"
A girlish squeak left the boy's lips at the sudden appearance of a boy next to him. He had spiky black hair and wore green clothes, along with a fishing rod strapped to his back. He was smiling happily, and it almost felt like Aeron's surprise and fear completely melted away just by his presence.
"Um... Hello."
"My name's Gon. What's yours?"
Aeron thought for a moment. Should he be honest? The boy didn't look like a threat, and he might even be a great friend. "...My name's Aeron. Aeron Bourque. Nice to meet you!" Gon shook Aeron's hand and both of the twelve-year-olds smiled. Now that he had a friend, Aeron wouldn't be as lost and confused as he would have without one.
"Hey, do you want to go explore the ship?"
"Sure!"
