|Y/N| was getting borderline homicidal. Singing the same unfinished lines for more than ten minutes would do that to anyone, especially after a less-than-productive rehearsal. Their band was hitting a rut creatively speaking, and they were determined to get at least one new song done. So, while the band slept in their respective homes, |Y/N| was bundled in a pile of nearly every blanket they had in their possession staring at their computer. The screen was open, and countless unfinished songs were on display. Surely one of them would be a decent enough start, right?

Wrong. Everything felt wrong. No matter how (Y/N) changed the lyrics or messed with the melody, nothing sounded right. It was by far the most infuriating thing they'd experienced as of late. They risked a glance at the clock, 02:00. They had school in the morning. They bit their lip, taking another look at their laptop in a fruitless effort to be stroked with genius before they threw in the towel for the night. One such strike never arrived, so they closed their laptop and pulled their blankets close.

Nino was waiting for |Y/N| outside their apartment, putting his headphones over their ears the second they opened their door. This was pretty normal for Nino, he'd been doing it nearly every morning since he started helping Void with recording and production, the boy was insatiable when it came to excuses to practice his craft. Nino even had the headphone settings prepped for |Y/N|'s comfort ahead of time.

Today it was a snippet from their practice a few days ago, Nino was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement before he pressed play. Nino loved messing with post-production effects, even isolating instruments to change the notes if he so chose. The music started, |Y/N| could tell instantly that he messed with the bass guitar and keyboard, but not for nothing- it sounded great. "Good morning to you too," they quipped, taking the headphones off as the clip ended. "I take it you were up late last night?"

"Of course I was," Nino gratefully took the headphones back and looped them around his neck, fixing the settings as he went "we have a showcase tonight why wouldn't I mess around a little." He got the door for them as they left the apartment building, starting the walk to school. "So?" He tilted his head, his face now in (Y/N)'s peripheral view "what'd you think?"

"I think it's annoying how talented you are." |Y/N|stated simply. "Your versions are always better."

"High praise coming from you, given everything you've got under your belt." Nino laughed, bashful as he dashed ahead of |Y/N| to cross the street. He waited for |Y/N|to meet him and he took his spot on the sidewalk, closer the cars than |Y/N, before he continued "I mean how many songs have you written? How many bands have you helped get to where they are now? Kitty Section? I mean hello you co-wrote so many of their songs."

|Y/N|tried not to flinch at the mention of Kitty Section. They didn't write them for the band. They wrote those songs with Luka- years ago. |Y/N|just shrugged "it's just songwriting, it's not nearly as technically difficult as the stuff you do." They tried to ignore the bitter taste any mention of Luka brought into their mouth even years later.

Nino shrugged "just don't sell yourself short, Adrien and I hate when you do that."

|Y/N| shrugged, a dismissive look on their face as they turned to hop up the school steps, Adrien likely in class waiting for them. "We'll pick this up later. Have fun~" they waved Nino off to his class while they made their way to their first class of the day, math.

Alec was the first to greet |Y/N|, draping an arm over their shoulders, energy drink in hand while he led them to their table with the rest of the band. Alec was easily the most recognizable person in the band next to |Y/N|. With his thick, curly black hair, mesmerizing green eyes, and sun-kissed skin dotted with enough freckles to look like an unobstructed night sky, coupled with his seemingly endless rings and style, he had serious TikTok edit potential. Unfortunately for his screaming fangirls, he was an out-and-proud asexual. He handed (Y/N) the worksheet for the day with a smile and sat next to them.

Eden, Void's bass player, who was already asleep, had just recently gotten silver braided into their hair instead of their usual pink, and their wire-rimmed glasses sat on their desk as they dozed off, their hoodie sleeves and arms serving as their usual pillow. (Y/N) watched Alec pick up Eden's hand and touch up their incredibly chipped nail polish with the polish he kept on hand just for them.

Everest, the blonde hair green-eyed keyboardist of the group, was already almost done with the assignment. They grinned and pat |Y/N| on the head as they huffed at the assignment. Everest was freakishly smart, almost annoyingly so. But they were definitely one of the nicest members of the band to strangers- second to maybe Alec.

"So," (Y/N) drummed their fingers on the table "you guys ready for the show tonight?"

Eden raised their unoccupied hand but didn't lift their head, Alec caught their arm before it hit the wall while the nail polish dried. Everest's face flushed "Yeah, of course! But, you know we're not the only band playing the venue tonight, right?"

(Y/N) nodded, laughing dismissively "we never are. Why?"

"Well," Everest looked at Alec like they were too nervous to say it. They lowered their voice "Kitty Section is gonna be there...we know that you and Luka have history and-"

"What does he have to do with this? We've booked a job, we're doing it. I'm not gonna let someone like him keep me from playing because of some petty drama." |Y/N|stated, the panic in their voice sounding like they were trying to convince themselves just as much as the rest of the band as they hid their now fidgeting hands under the desk. They saw the doubtful, almost pitying looks Alec and Everest exchanged. "I'm serious-" defensive of their point, but cut off.

|Y/N|'s attempt at convincing their bandmates and best friends was promptly interrupted by the teacher actually starting the lesson. Everest's posture straightened, readying themself to explain the lesson to the rest of the group. Alec shook Eden gently, softly murmuring that class was starting, swiftly earning a middle finger from the sleeping silver-haired teen.

|Y/N|settled into their seat, trying to take solace in the daily routine so they don't think about that stupid Couffaine kid. They would rather choke than get roped into his antics again.

"What?" |Y/N| half-shouted, pacing the green room while Eden snuck a chip from the bowl in front of them. They pressed their ear to the door, fuming as they recognized the song. "That asshole has a lot of nerve."

Alec was about ready to break into a nervous sweat as they pulled |Y/N|back into the couch, placing them on his lap and wrapping his arms around their waist to keep them from storming off. |Y/N| huffed, crossing their arms while they mumbled to themselves.

Eden raised their hand as they finished their can of soda, "what happened to 'I'm not gonna let someone like him keep me from playing because of some petty drama.' Because from the look on your face this is about as petty drama as it gets." They leaned back in their seat, a satisfied smile on their face at the surprised look on |Y/N|'s face. "I'm just saying, you knew something like this was gonna happen."

|Y/N| threw their hands up in the air, trying to stand up and pace again but Alec held them down "but playing to eternity? Is he serious?" The band didn't know the full story of that song, and they didn't plan to tell them. But |Y/N|, as horrifyingly frustrating as it was, couldn't pretend it didn't hurt them. They looked down, sinking into Alec's comforting hug as they turned to wrap their arms around his neck "we were supposed to play it together."

"For someone who says they're over it, you sure aren't acting like it." Everest chimed in as they came into the green room, more drinks on a tray they set down on the table.

|Y/N| rolled their eyes, taking a drink from the tray "I am over it. I'll show you how over it I am when we play in just twenty short minutes. "

Everest and Eden exchanged a look, they were most definitely not over it. And from the way Alec held |Y/N|, it was obvious he also knew |Y/N| was full of shit.
