Chapter 2: An Old Wise Tale

She never saw it coming. Nobody did. There were screams, and then there was blood. No bodies, just blood. It was still dark outside, which meant that Lex couldn't see them coming.

"Krysten, run!" Lex screams at her.

Eyes bloodshot and scared, the girl never looks back at her brother. After being on the run for so long, it seemed very ironic how these horrific creatures just suddenly appear out of nowhere and invade the camp. She felt like a bug. A small, frightened little bug.

One of them yells to a young soldier who was dragging the old lady, Minvera, onto the hovercraft.

"Genesis, after the girl!" he shouts, pointing in the direction that Lex's sister had ran.

I wake up in a sweat. Not again, I groan to myself. I had hoped to not have that nightmarish dream for months. I guess I was wrong, as usual. Kasey rolls over on her side and opens her beady brown eyes.

"You okay Krysten?" she asks me with deep concern.

I shake my head.

"It's nothing," I tell her.

Another lie I had to say. Great. Am I going to keep lying to my friends about everything else that has gone wrong? Shit.

She stares at me contently.

"Krysti, I know something's up."

My eyes widen slightly. She was on to me now. Damn it.

"Just another bad dream," I say, shaking my head.

Her eyes soften a little.

"Which one was it?" Kassidy questions as she sits up.

I sigh.

"The one about the camp getting attacked," I explain, suprised that I was willing to tell my best friend that much.

"You too?"

I nod my head.

"I thought I'd never have it again, but I guess my karma's gone bad again."

"Well, I think that those weird Superiors are trying to mess with our heads," Kasey theorizes.

I shrug.

"There's no telling what they've been up to for the past 2 years," I reply.

It was a while before Kassidy fell back asleep. Of course, I was still awake, as usual.

"Oh my gods, I know I should do this, but I have nothing else to do. And I certainly don't have the time to go back to sleep either."

I sneak out of the tent, hoping that nobody would hear me leaving. I go over to the small storage shack on the other side of camp (Convenient huh?) to get a change of clothes. A moment or two later, I shake off my old, worn out clothing and slip into a nice black sweater that came down to my knees. I look for some socks, a pair of black leggings that didn't have holes in them (because I'm picky like that) and my favorite black fur boots.

He never thought that he would be here, in the woods, along with other teenagers that were enlisted into this program. It just felt... Odd. His father had died months ago, yet he seemed to be famous for the discovery of those humans deep into the bayou.

"Genesis, are you daydreaming or what?"

Startled, he looked to his left to see Monica Burrows staring at him, frustrated that he wasn't listening to Corporal Matthews.

"No, Monica, I was just imagining why you even wanted to enlist," Xavier says sarcastically.

"Shut up Xavier," she snaps at him.

Genesis laughs.

"Just don't go all bitchy on me, and everything will be fine."

It was a little while before I left camp, positive that everyone else was still asleep. I know this was bad, but heck, could things get any worse than curiousity?

I started to hear voices nearby. They were faint, but I didn't want to risk getting caught out here. I look around desperately for a place to hide, but no luck. If I go back to camp, I'd surely get everyone in deep trouble, yet if I don't go now, then I would get caught. Either way, I was doomed.

"Burrows and Genesis, would you two stop flirting with each other?" I hear one of them say in a sharp tone.

I hear someone groan.

"It's not my fault that Xavier is being annoying!" another one, a girl, complains irritably.

A laugh echos through the cold night air.

"Come now Monica," a boy tells her. "It's not my fault that you like me."

There was silence for a moment, which was very bad on my end. Fuck. A tree branch snaps under my foot. I start to shake a little, fear starting to rush down my spine.

"Did you hear that?" the girl, Monica, whispers into the silence.

Before I could react, a flashlight is lit, and its bright light catches me.

"Ah, we've found one alright," the one with the deep voice says to the others. "Didn't think that it would be this easy.

I mentally laugh to myself, some of the fear draining away from my paralyzed body. You better watch what you say, because I am one of the fastest humans you will ever see, bucko.

Eyes a dark sky blue, I smile slight and dart into the trees, hoping that they didn't have dogs with them to track my scent.

"After her!" he yells.

I groan as I see city lights up ahead. Damn it. They had somehow changed direction and got me to run into X-Alpha Territory. There is a laugh coming from behind me.

"Didn't anyone teach you about curiousity killing the cat?" I hear one of them purr.

"Didn't anyone tell you that that saying is an old wise tale?" I counter.

Another laugh. Great. Now they think I was funny.

"Always expect the unexpected," he replies.

I grin.

"My mother always told me that one," I tell them. "Like right now, for instance."

My eyes dart in the direction of a river. Probably eleven yard away. I could make it.

"What, not expecting someone like you?" Monica asks me.

"Yes, but there's always a twist, isn't there?" I state, rather as a question than a statement.

I stare at the current. I could escape, possibly. Without any other thoughts of hesitation, Isprint towards the wide river and dive into its uncontrollable currents. Someone dives in after me. Well, I hope they don't cry for help anytime soon, because frankly, I think I have a better chance.

Monica curses to herself as Justin jumps into the river after the human girl.

"She isn't worth it, Corporal," Monica grumbles.

"Burrows, if you weren't so uptight, then you would have noticed how civilized she sounded," Matthews told her.

She narrows her eyes.

"What do you mean by that, Sir?" she asks.

He laughs.

"I think I know who Major's long lost daughter is," Matthews replied. "And this is no old wise tale either."
