CHERRY BLEW HER GUM INTO A BUBBLE!

Vance had recently made things official with Mia, a girl a year below him, and probably the sweetest girl who'd ever look in his direction.

Poor girl, Cherry thought, watching Vance rifle through the mess of papers in his backpack. He'd done his homework that night, just to impress Mia. At least, that's what Cherry assumed, because Vance never did his homework. He just copied off the answers that she copied.

Mia offered to help the redhead carry her coffees. The girl accepted gratefully, mumbling something about manning up and taking her on a real date if Vance wouldn't.

"It's seven in the fucking morning." Vance complained, glaring at the people in the hallway. "Can these people shut the hell up?"

"You just need a better sleep schedule." Mia advised.

"This isn't my fault. You made me stay up for three extra hours last night to watch Titanic. Which was shit, by the way."

"It's a good movie! We're just like Jack and Rose."

"Did we watch the same movie? You know they died, right?"

"Yeah."

"I'm Rose. You're Jack."

"No, I'm Rose."

"I would shove you off that piece of wood for a gumball and some pocket lint, with no hesitation."

"You are not good at this romance thing. We could both fit on the piece of wood?"

The bell rang, signaling the beginning of first period. Mia handed Cherry back her coffee, and adjusted her backpack, waving goodbye to Cherry and kissing her boyfriend's cheek.

Vance followed after her. "I switched my schedule to be in your class."

"You know it's Honors English, right?" Mia's voice began to fade into the distance.

"What are you trying to say?"

"That you're an idiot."

Finney was the first student to get to class. His teacher seemed to be going through some sort of mid-life crisis, because he was setting up a movie to play instead of a real lesson that would prepare them for their upcoming final.

He'd noticed Cherry's absence from school for an entire week straight. For a moment, he wondered if she might've been sick.

Then he remembered it was Cherry Garcia he was thinking about, the same girl who'd been threatened with continuation school a million times over. She was just skipping.

Finney observed how his classmate's gazes fell on Cherry as she walked in. She didn't seem at all fazed, or like she really wanted to be there.
