Hufflepuff Common Room
| 11:04 PMAlthough the sun had already gone down and the sky had darkened, light filled the Hufflepuff common room. Josephine had just finished moving all her belongings into her shared dorm and decided to relax on her first night back. She had found a large golden armchair in the corner of the common room, illuminated by the soft glow of the fireplace. She laid back in the chair and closed her eyes. But, before she could drift off into a peaceful sleep, a shout awoke her.
"Boo!"
Josephine gasped and opened her eyes, only to see one of her best friends, Gaspard Shingleton.
"Haha! I really got you that time, didn't I?" He said; the Irish accent was easily recognizable. The boy grinned at her shocked state and patted her on the shoulder.
"My god! You gave me a heart-attack!" she said, looking up from the armchair. The tall boy laughed again, now running a hand through his curly hair.
"Oh come on Jo, dont be so dramatic! That's my job." Jo rolled her eyes but held back a smile.
"Alright then, just don't scare me like that again." She stood up to face him and held out her arms.
"Its good to see you pardy." Gaspard hugged her tightly and chuckled.
"Yeah, good to see you, too."
Josephine had met Gaspard her first year at Hogwarts. She had lost her way in the castle when a small Hufflepuff had come up to her and offered his help. From then on, the two grew closer and eventually became inseparable. While each had a very different personality, they complimented each-other perfectly.
After the two hugged, Gaspard sat in a chair opposite to Josephine. He let out a loud sigh and propped his feet up on a small wooden table. Josephine eyed the dirt crusted boots that were now rudely placed on the coffee table. She raised an eyebrow.
"Really?" She motioned to the boots, which had created a pile of dust on the clean surface. Gaspard looked at her face, down at his shoes, then back up to meet her eyeline.
"Oh, come on MOM. Just let me relax a second!" Josephine sighed, then sunk back into her chair.
"Fine. Just don't blame me when the prefects give you a detention for mistreating the furniture." She chuckled and looked back at the muddy boots.
"I mean, they act like the tables have feelings. It's WOOD for christ's sake." Gaspard shook his head and gazed at the fireplace. Josephine smiled at the boy and leaned forward to brush off some of the dust from the table.
"So.." Gaspard started. Jo finished brushing off and looked up.
"So what?"
"So, what do we have planned for our first night back?" Gaspard looked at Josephine like it was the most obvious remark.
"Hmm, sleep was on my schedule. I mean, what else is there to do? We wanna be ready for classes tomorrow, right?" Gaspard scoffed and removed his boots from the table.
"Oh, come on! That's it? That's all there is? Keeping up with school?" She stared at the frazzled boy with amusement.
"No, of course not. But I'd like at least get a good night's rest to start off the school year, wouldn't you?"
"No! Sleep is for the weaklings who can't function after bloody eleven o'clock!" Jo laughed at Gaspard, who was now becoming more irritated by the second.
"Alright, if I'm so boring then what would someone like you do? You know, because you're OBVIOUSLY so much more exciting."
Gaspard smirked and leaned back into his seat.
"Obviously, I would sneak out and explore the castle." Jo sighed and shook her head.
"We've seen the castle before. Besides, you do realize we could get a month's detention for sneaking out past curfew?" The boy rolled his eyes and positioned his arms on either side of his armchair.
"So what! It's only detention! Live a little Jo!" He then leaned forwards towards Josephine and started smiling. Then, in a low voice, he said,
"And besides, there's only a punishment if you get caught." He retreated back to his chair with a cocky grin plastered on his face.
"So, what do you say we go on a little walk?" Josephine shook her head once more.
"No way. I can't afford a detention before the first day even starts!" Gaspard groaned and clasped his hands together in front of the girl.
"Please! I'm begging you to have a little fun!" Josephine chuckled, but didn't answer him.
"Just this once Jo. I promise you we won't get caught." He shook his clasped hands in desperation. Josephine pondered the idea for a moment, then finally spoke.
"If we get caught, I swear to god Gaspard I will tell everyone to call you Gassy Shingles." His eyes lit up with excitement.
"I knew you would crack, eventually! Let's go!" Gaspard stood up with a new confidence in his voice.
"Woah, woah, you heard what I said, right? We get caught and you're gonna be in for a year of pain and hellfire." Jo stood up from the armchair to exit the common room.
"Yeah yeah, calm down Diggory. It's not like we're bloody burying a man. And we won't get caught, I promise." He quietly opened the rounded oak door of the Hufflepuff common room. Josephine clambered out the exit, right after her curly haired friend. As she closed the wooden door softly, Jo thought to herself, I better not regret this.
