Chapter 1

Birdie let out a strangled sob as her father pushed the knife deeper into her mother's stomach. She couldn't move. Couldn't scream. Couldn't do anything as the only person she ever loved finally left her. It was like she could see her mother smiling and disappearing into the clouds. The sky cried all the tears Birdie wasn't able to and the thunder screamed so that she didn't have to. She limply let herself be dragged by her father as he pushed her into the shed and locked the door. It felt as if the ground beneath her feet disappeared and she was falling into the great abyss. She finally let out the wave of tears she was holding in. She's been closed off ever since, scared to let anybody get close. That was until she met Collie.

"Elizabeth Cole?" the old fat substitute announced. Birdie raised her hand and muttered a quiet "Here". The whole class turned to look at her and the substitute furrowed his eyebrows together. It didn't bother her much anymore, at least not like it used to. Everyone knew about how her father went to court and got put on death row, they don't know why though. People are funny like that. They don't have answers so they make up their own. Birdie was about to ask if she could see the nurse when BANG! A girl with bright red hair and dark clothes kicked the door open and smiled smugly. Birdie looked up and the two girls locked eyes, they kept eye contact as the girl smiled. Birdie looked away quickly and started shifting in her seat. The substitute motioned the redhead over and handed her a tardy slip. Birdie could only stare with shock as the red head took the empty seat next to her and waved. Come on get a hold of yourself. Birdie waved back awkwardly and went back to reading How to kill a Mockingbird. She felt someone staring at her and looked around to find it was that girl again. The stranger passed her a folded note and winked. She looked at the note then at her sleeves and back at the note. Luckily, the bell rang and she could finally go home. Birdie stuffed the note in her pocket and hurriedly left the classroom. What the hell was that? She could feel eyes on her as she crossed the parking lot but she didn't care. Let them stare. She shook her head as she fumbled with her new silver car keys. Once inside the car she noticed her hands were shaking. She turned the car on, sat for a few minutes so she could calm down her breathing and then collect her scrambled thoughts. Before Birdie could pull out of her designated parking space there was a knock on her window. She jumped, surprised by the sudden noise. Whoever was outside knocked again and Birdie sighed as she rolled her window down. Her eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat as the stranger that she loved so many nights ago smiled hesitantly. Birdie clutched the steering wheel and kept her eyes glued to the floor. The silence was deafening. It was as if the whole world went silent, waiting and watching to see what would happen next. The brunette standing outside her car cleared his throat. "Hey Liz" he finally croaked out. She clutched the steering wheel tighter and mumbled something under her breath. The brunette adjusted the worn out backpack that clung to his shoulder. "I'm sorry?" he asked normally. "I said. Don't. Call. Me. Liz'' she hissed out with a clenched jaw. The boy outside shifted uncomfortably on his feet and then sighed, clearly disappointed. "Could we just...talk..please?" he cautioned. Birdie shook her head and got out of the car. "What do you want? '' she demanded. She leaned back against her car and glared at the brunette across from her. "I uh like your hair" he smiled but dropped it when he noticed her eyebrows furrowing together. "Listen Liz-" he stopped mid sentence and cleared his throat. "I mean uh Elizabeth, i'm sorry the way things ended between us. It was a crappy thing of me to do and I-I just wanted to know if we could start over..." he whispered the last part. She almost didn't hear him and looked up at him with tears falling from her eyes. She tried to stifle her giggling and he froze up, itching the back of his head nervously. "You must think i'm still that same stupid girl who you promised you would never leave" she shot back at him. He was at loss for words, so he just stood there not knowing what to say or do. "Listen Liz I said I was sorry-" he tried explaining again but yelped in surprise when he felt A hand smack him across the face. "You are so full of it! You can't just play me like a fool and expect me to come crawling back to you" she snapped at him. "It was funny that you promised me you were the one person who would love me forever, no matter what, under any circumstance. I believed you. I really believed you..." she whimpered and held back a sob "You can't say things like that to a person and then play it off as a joke as soon as it gets tough" she chuckled with tears threatening to spill out any second. "I called you that night" she whispered. His eyes widened in realization. "Liz I-" he only managed to get out that much before she slapped him again. "I don't want your apology! I don't even care that you were messing around with Alison Jones!'' she snarled while tears clouded her eyes. "You were supposed to be there!" she let a sob slip out. "I know I wasn't there when you needed me...but I'm here now and I know we can figure this out together. I want there to be an us again" he said hesitantly. She clenched her fists. "There was never an us Reagan...and there never will be" she shot back and another wave of tears slipped out. "The worst part is I still love you...and I hate myself for it" she whispered and looked back up at him. "We could try again Liz, just me and you against the world once again" he smiled hopefully at her. She looked away and let more tears out. "I can't Reagan...I can't put myself through that again" she forced out. Reagan's hopeful smile fell and he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I think it's best if you leave" Birdie whimpered. Reagen took a few steps back and sighed. "I really am sorry" he looked at her tear-streaked face one last time before he turned and left her standing alone with tears streaming down her face for a second time. Birdie slipped into her car and broke down completely as she laid her head on the steering wheel. She doesn't know why she even talked to him. It felt good to get everything off her chest though. I better get home, Grandma is probably going crazy right now. She wiped her tears, cleaned her rundown mascara and plastered on a smile.
