'' burr....'' It was nearly thirty-five degrees outside for a late fall day that was pretty chilly. The date was exactly October 8th, 2022, your outfit; was a pair of loose black joggers, a blue long-sleeve shirt underneath a black winter coat with a fuzzy hood, perfectly suited for the seasonal weather.
The walk home was a long one, but despite the cold temperature and the random stranger here and there, it was relaxing for you. The cold nipped at your nose and the wind brushed through your short brown hair, giving you a new set of goosebumps every so often.
Out of nowhere, your phone began to buzz. Panicking, you answer after a few rings. Nobody ever calls you, only texts. ''hello..?'' you spoke softly.
Despite your average stature and build, you were more of the gently natured type of guy. Now that in no way meant you were shy, you just preferred to be calm and collected.
''hey (Y/N), it's jack'' the man spoke. You sighed in relief but remained nervous. ''hey boss, what can I do for you?'' silently in your head, you hoped he wasn't calling to fire you or anything like that. ''I'm sorry to call you out of the blue, I need someone to cover a shift tonight at the diner, would you mind? Of course, overtime pay is available. It would just be you tonight though is that alright?'' you could tell Jack was in a hurry to get this settled. It was already 7 pm and the night shift started at 10 pm.
The diner you work at is a small local place that is open 24/7. Not many customers come in at night aside from the all-nighter travelers or someone looking for a quiet place to relax if they can't go home.
''oh sure, would it be alright if I come in at 10:30? I'm nearly home but I'd like to shower and change before heading over if that's alright with you?'' you shivered as another gust of wind blew past, you hoped it wasn't audible through the phone.
''Sure kiddo no problem. I'll leave it unlocked since I promised my wife I'd be home for our anniversary dinner tonight. I appreciate the help.'' He spoke, you could tell he was smiling on his end of the phone. You both said your goodbyes and hung up.
''fuck..'' you dramatically groaned aloud. The diner was at least a 45-minute drive from your apartment and you had just gotten out of your last class for the day. Hopefully, there'll be some time before work for relaxation.
Speeding up your pace you decided to quickly take a shortcut through the woods. It was no concern to you since you had been taking the same path for a year now. The sun was setting and you wanted to be home before then so without another thought you hurriedly made your way down the faint dirt trail. The fog was usually thicker in the woods compared to the streets but you didn't mind it.
After around 6 minutes you felt uneasy as if someone or something was watching you. It was a familiar and common feeling that often happened down this trail so you shrugged it off and continued your way back.
Despite your lack of concern, there was something watching you in the woods. Every time.
