He was getting out today. Finally. The last month was especially hard to endure. He could feel the end coming which made time pass by even slower. But today was it. He had not slept at all, with all the excitement rushing through his mind. When the alarm clock rang at 6 am he instantly got up, got dressed and waited for the staff to come get him. 15 minutes later, the door was unlocked. He recognized Greg, the head of the center as he opened the door. He was a man in his fifties, who always wore a suit.
"So, how's my favorite delinquent doing?"
"Great, can't wait to get out of here"
"Hey, that's actually quite mean you know"
"Oh, I didn't mean it for you."
"Just kidding. I'm glad you're getting out. Let's go"

He followed Greg out of his room. As he exited, he turned back to get one last look at his room. He felt almost sad to be leaving it, which was so unexpected.
"Well, do you wanna get out of here or what?'
"Of course"
"You know I'm gonna miss you kiddo. You've grown a lot in here."

They came at the end of the corridor. Greg took out his key pass and opened the door to his office.
It was a pretty small room, with a couple of chairs opposing a desk with lockers behind it. Those storages were used to keep the delinquents' personal belongings, until they got out of juvie. Greg opened the container containing his stuff: the clothes he wore when he was arrested, his favorite pair of shoes, at last form the ones that were not taken back, and his phone.
Greg handed him all of that with a plastic bag and a smile.
"Well. This is it. Look, I know what's waiting for you at home. So, if you have any problems, you can call me. But you can't mess up again. You'll be an adult in a week. Which means you'll go to prison, and I swear it will change you. You're an amazing kid. And you're really smart when you stop to think. So don't be stupid"
He was too stunned to speak. No one had ever shown so much affection for him.
Greg finished talking and the both of them headed for the exit.
"Take care of yourself, and it has been a pleasure to accompany you for the last few months Tommy Shepherd."

Tommy almost started crying as he headed for the bus stop, but controlled himself. He suddenly realized he was finally outside. He felt ecstatic and hopeful.
Once he arrived at the stop, his mood suddenly changed. The bus for Eastview had just arrived and passengers were boarding. He could go home. That was not what he had planned but maybe it would be better this time.
No, he couldn't. They had never even bothered to visit. He couldn't possibly go home to them. So, he waited for the bus to leave. He still felt quite upset, and didn't want to wait anymore. Screw being discreet. He wanted to run.

He took off the juvie shoes and put on his sneakers. He then packed every thing into his plastic bag and started running. How he had missed the feeling : the wind brushing violently against his whole body, his hair bouncing up and down his scalp, the lightness on his feet and most of all, the electricity floating all around him.
Though he didn't know how it happened, he thanked the universe every day for having given him super-speed.
