Life was almost back to normal for Akaashi Keiji.Almost.
Everything was just the same as it had been except without her.
With each day that passed, the pain and grief he felt for her loss never receded. On some days, he felt okay enough to carry on doing the daily things he had done before she left him. On other days the pain would become too much to the point where he'd break down into tears, desperately longing for her presence.
He would have lovely dreams about her only to wake up to a cold, empty spot next to him on the bed they had shared. He would call out to her for help while doing his daily tasks only to be met with silence in response. He would reach his hand out to his side as he walked only to grab at nothing but air.
Akaashi had been told that these feelings would subside with time but he didn't think it would ever go away.
Yesterday, he had received a parcel at his door. To his surprise, it had been sent from her. He had yet to open it and so there it sat on the dainty coffee table in front of the sofa. It was nothing more than just a big, brown envelope with her handwriting gracing the front. The back was sealed shut although her work was clearly all over it with all the cute stickers she had stuck on.
He picked it up, wiping away the remainder of his tears, and carefully broke the seal on the flap. Inside were smaller, pastel colored envelopes and when he took them out, he noticed they were numbered in the corner.
There were ten letters.
The fronts of the envelopes had been left untouched; no writing, no stickers, nothing. The backs of each one however had a dried flower, carefully preserved and taped onto the envelope. Examining each one, he realized that they were the flowers he had gifted her while she had been in the hospital.
He began to cry again, hugging the stack of letters close to him so that they wouldn't be ruined by the tears that dripped from his chin. Once he calmed down, he texted his manager that he wasn't feeling well and couldn't come into work. His manager responded almost instantly and approved the day off, understanding what Akaashi was going through.
Gathering himself together, Akaashi took a deep breath and prepared himself for the contents of the letters in his hand.
