METANOIA • (n) The journey of changing one's mind, heart, self, or way of life
NOVEMBER 21, 2021
Oakley and Indigo walked across the hospital parking lot. He held a bag filled with his old clothes, wearing new ones now. The pair entered the car in silence. Indigo didn't turn the car on, they just sat in the parked car in silence. Oakley sat in the passenger seat with his head down. A single tear rolled down the girl's cheek as she shook her head from side to side.
"When you do it again I'm done." The girl said. Not if he did it again but when. She couldn't take being in the 23-year-old's life anymore. She was drawing the line. You might say she was being selfish, but she'd already tried for years to get him help. She tried her best and she knew now it was a lost cause. You can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped.
And he did do it again.
NEEDLE FIXATION ¹
When people become addicted not only to the drug, but also to the ritual of drawing their drug up into a needle, and the act of injecting it.DECEMBER 3, 2021
Oakley lay unconscious on the floor, a needle stuck in his arm. Indigo felt sick to her stomach as she was frozen in place. No matter how many times she found him, it was the same feeling every time. She took her phone out of her pocket, dialed 999, and checked his pulse. She sat there next to him on the floor waiting for the paramedics to come to take him to the hospital. Her two fingers remained against his neck for a pulse the entire time, too scared to remove them. She cried silently, not making a noise.
Indigo sat in the hospital waiting room bouncing her leg anxiously. A doctor walked from the hall holding a clipboard. "Ceasar-Su?" She called out, Indigo shot up from her seat walking over to the petite woman. "Yes, is he okay?"
"He is stable, you're very lucky you found him when you did. It seems like he was probably there for a while." The doctor explained.
"Can I see him?" The girl asks. "Of course, right this way."
They walk down the hall and then turned onto another until they came up to the room on the right-hand side. "Here you are ma'am, I'll give you some privacy."
The doctor walked away as Indigo only stood in the doorway of the room. A curtain was blocking her view of the hospital bed. She took a deep breath and walked in, being met with her best friend laying in the hospital bed. His attention was on the television mounted on the wall across the room. His eyes were low and he looked tired. His attention was diverted once he saw Indigo walk in. His facial expression didn't change, he just stared at her. She stood there at the foot of the bed in silence.
"Oakley I love you...and I wish you the best in life, I really do."
He never said anything. He just continued to stare at her. After a few seconds, the girl turned and walked out of the room. She left that familiar hospital for the last time. 5 years of friendship ended. She cried on her way back to their shared apartment, she cried while she packed up all of her things, and she cried as she drove to the airport. And then eventually, there weren't any more tears to cry. She sat on the airport lounge floor watching the planes take off. Her phone dinged.
